A New York electrical journal some time ago told of an incident that occurred in the fitting up of a new office building near the New York end of the Brooklyn Bridge. The engineer of the building wished to wire the offices throughout for

the electric light in addition to the gus pipes on which the conservative pro-

prietor insisted. But all his arguments were in vain, and the apparently useless extravagance of electric wiring was obstinately vetoed. Suddenly, however, ahappy thought struck the venerable

owner. ‘“‘Why,” he said, ‘if the wires carry electricity, can’t you make them carry gas, too?” A counterpart of this

story is now told of a shipyard carpen- ter, a native of Troon, on the coast of Ayrshire, Scotland.
