That was a mistake, Then Elacky the Crow said he had seen Show- tall the Shrew in the Old Er'r.r Patch and Stalkeye had left as hurriedly as a snail can, which is slowly. Peter was sure that this was foolishness on the part of Stalkeye. for he didn't believe any one as small as Short-Tail the Shrew could possibly hurt the little Inall inside the house of shell he carried with him on his back. This was another mistake for Stalkeye would have been no safer inside his house than out of it had the fierce, always hungry little Shrew iound him.

”We've never seen Short-Tail in the old Brier Patch before. Pro- bably hell be gone in a day or so. He won't stay," said Peter to Mrs. Peter.

Now when Mrs. Peter caller. Short-Tall a monster. She didn't mean that he was very .blg. or very ugly to look at. How much simpler it would be ii a word had only one meaning. Short-Tail the Shrew, like all the members 0! his family, is small, and not ugly to look at, although he isn't PW”-Y either. But he has an enormous appetite, for his size one oi the biz- gest appetites in all the Great World. So almost every minute he is awake, day or night, he is hunt- ing, killing and eating any one no can find smaller than hlrnselt and even some his own size or a. little bigger. He is smaller than Danny Meadow Mouse, but. wisely, Danny keeps out or his way. Now I guess you know why Mrs,' Peter called him a little monster.

" I don't like to think or him liv- ing here: said Mrs. Peter.

"He isn't," declared Peter. "He is just visiting. I'm sure of it." Then he gave no more thought to short- Tail the Shrew. '

It was two day later when Peter reached home just at daylight that he learned that once again he was mistaken. Mrs. Peter was waiting ior him. "You're wrong," she snap- ped. She was apt to be cross Wilin Peter was away from the dear Cilii Briar Patch all night. She worrleil and worry makes iolks cross some- times.

"That shrew," replied Mrs. Pe- ter.

"He isn't visiting here. He is at home here." rbeorted Mrs. Peter.

"How do you know?" demanded Peter. It was plain that he doubted that Mrs. Peter really knew.

"Because what?" cried Peter im- patiently. r

"Because I have seen Mrs. shori- '.l'all and I know right where they are living. They are very much at home in the old Brier Patch if you ask me, and-and-" She didn't ilnlsh.
