Hamilton, of the First Presbyterian church, preaching on Sunday, said that trouble in the church arose from a desire to mix with the outeide world. This produced the desire for playing cards, dancing, theatre-going and uovel reading, and he challenged his hearers to point to a single instance where a Christian of this sort was of any use in church work. “The public library of this city,” said Mr. Ham- ilton, “is not an unmixed guod or an un- mixed evil among us, and in some respecte it is acurse to Brantford. I understand there are far more novels read than any- thing else and that Saturday night is their busiest night at the library. This means that the young people conoected with our churches are in there getting a stock of novels to read on Sunday, and that is why the ,eople easily get tired of the manna they receive ov Sunday.”

The vigorous foreiga policy of France evidently costs something. The tax bill of the people grows heavier. No wonder that we hear mutterings of discontent. The Budget Committee the other day definitely agreed to a scheme for raisitig 14,000,000 francs by @ tax on foreign securities, and 16,000,000 francs by an increased siamp.duty on foreign State loans. The moor carriage, through a novelty, has already been pretty heavily taxed. This last item of taxation is graduated according to the size of the towa or city in which the owner of the carriage

lives. In Paris the tax is 60fr off, for carriages seating two persons, and rising to 100fr.

But in towns of 40,000 population it is graduated from 49fr. to 75fr., and_ stil! lower for towns uf emaller dimensions and less population.
