suowfoot and his Pretty mate, rnikle. were two homeless little Woodmice. They had started to make a home together in an old tin can they had found beside Laughing Brook. A heavy rain had caused a flood, and the old can with the two little Mice in it had floated down Laughing Brook and across the Smiling Pool. Now -Vhey were once more on shore, yet, but oh so happy.

Presently, their happiness once nore gave way to worry. This was s new and wholly changed world zhey were in. They had been born n the Green Forest, so they really were little forest folk. Now, they were out on the Green Meadows! where there was only one tree near. a big hickory tree growing on the batik of the Smiling Pool. Being out in the open was so frightening. Where could they go?

”What do we do now?" squeaked Tmkle.

"I found a path! I' cried Snowtoot.

"What good is that? What we want is a hiding-place." cried Tinkle.

"A path may lead us to one. Come on. my dear, and we'll find out." replied Snowfoot.
