At Burnham Thorpe, the birthplace of Horatio Nelson, is t1e church in wh ch he was baptised; t:e rectory field a:d garden in which he »'ayed asa child ; the old beech trees anc willows which over- shadowed the ‘yur: ~ in which he sailed his little boats as a boy. The old rectory is gone, having been superseded by a new parsonage of greater pretensions and higher up the slope of the hill. In the parish register is- the entry of the baptism of ‘Horatio Nelson” by his father, with a marginal note of a laier date in the hand writing ef the Admival’s brother, after- wards Earl Nelson, rocording the promo- tion of the aforesaid infant to the Order of the Bath and the rank of Rear Admiral. But other record of our great naval hero thers is none at Burn'iam Thorpe. There is not even a rural monument to his mem- ory in the chureh.

Strength of Habit.

M. Dupin, the great jurist, was the pre- sident of the old French assembly. Te aid him in presiding, he had beside him a bell which he rang to call the members to order. Inconsequence of the excitability of the members of the chamber and the frequent scenes, the exercises of this presi- dential bell we -e incessant and most annoy- ing. The muscular exertion required to use it, at length, got to be so great that M. Dupin inventel a framework in which to suspend it, so that it could be rung by pull- ing a cord, which rendered the task of sounding it mueh easier. At last it got to be quite habitual for him to ring it. One sultry summer day, when the heat was very oppresive and the eloquence of the moun- tain was severely soporific, the president fell asleep in his official chair ; and as his head dropped on the desk, aclap of thun- der seemed to shake the walls of the build- ings. M. Dupin started, and by an in- stinctive movement, seizing the bell rope, pulled awayat it might and main, and shonted at the top of his voice, ‘* Order, order !” until the affrighted secretaries could make him understand that the inter- ruption did not proceed from the members before him, but from the heavens above him, where his presidential authority did not reach. M. Dupin was observed, ever after this, to fight shy of the bell.

The $20,000 defarlter, Wm. Dempster, manager Of the Inyerseil Branch of- Mol- son’s Bank, was arrested at Moncten on Monday. He expressed great sorrow at the charge which had placed himin this posi- tion. The only account he gave of the funds wis that he had spent them. He began in the usual wavy with little, and had to practice deception ‘o cover up his crime. He is a middle-aged man and his situation is rendered more sad »y the serious illness

of his wife. He will remain here uniil his transfer to Woodstock, where his trial! will take place.

At Kentville, during Court week, the Judge offered to pay for the land in dispute in a certain case, if tie parties settled the costs between thera. The costs amounted to about $200—price of land between $4 and $6,—a paying ‘‘spec” for the Judge, as a regular army of witnesses had to testify.

A malignant and fatal disease is reported from Lendon township, Ontario, called ‘black tongue.” The symptoms are des- cribed as somewhat similar to those of dip- theria. Five children of Mr. Richard Weatheral, ef the fifth egncession of Lon- don, have died from this disease and others are now down, but may recover.
