To the Editor of the Egaminer.

Str,—On behalf of many leading men in this County, [ have to thank you for quotations lately given in your Daily from European and other markets. The writer knows a number who are now going to be- come ‘‘pay in advance subscribers,” from the fact of your notice of Liverpool markets in yesterday’s issue. It is a want long felt by our Island people, who are kept in the dark on this most important matter.

it is cheering to learn that oats have taken a slight rise in Charlottetown, and it would be well if our oat traders would put the oats at once to what they can fairly pay aud leave sufficient margin for profits. It is agreat mistake to keep advancing slowly and only come up to a big figure at the end of the shipping season. It affects both sellers and buyers alike; as those-who can will hold on to their grain, and it often happens that those engayed in buying are at the last moment obliged to pay more than the real value in order to complete several cargoes in different plaves, and thereby make losses, which is not the wish Our traders should endeavor to establish the trade for the time to come in the interest of all. Give what they can, and give no more. But do so at all times alike.

if possible our Island press’ should at this particular time bring to the notice of the European traders that our Island can now, and would gladly sell hundreds of cargoes of potatoes (early rose) at from twenty-two to twenty-five cents per bushel. Such facts can soon be made known in all parts of Europe, should the press generally announce the same, whilst very many of our people would rather read such matter in the press just now than to be treated weekly to some uncalled for political tirade, which cannot possibly produce any good, now or in the future.

The writer is pleased to know from actual knowledge that ere long you will be called upon to add largely to your subscription list, as the farmers of this Island are fast learning how and by what means they, as a class, and the Island generally, may be benefited. In future, the newspaper that is best deserving will only be taken. Economy is the watch- word, but let us know how to effect it.

The Imperial Alhancs.

The correspondent of the London Stand- ard at Dresden in writing of the dissolution of the Three Emperors’ Alliance relates something as to itorigin. When, after the victorious issue of the French campaign, the Emperor Francis Joseph announced his intention to come to Berlin, and, by a per- sonal visit, make up for his delinqueney in joining an anti-German league previous to the outbreak of the war, the Czar Alexan- der, fearing his Austrian friend might be induced to enter into close relations with his Prussiah friend, likewise invited him- self to the Royal interview at the German metropolis. As the Czar’s visit could not well be declined, Alexander II. inconti-

ALONG THE Wuarves.—aA large fleet of small schooners from Nova Scotia and New- foundiand appeared in port on Monday morning for cargoes. Through the day many of vhem left for neighboring shipping places to secure freights. A number went to Montague, others to Cardigan, Grand River, Sturgeon, St. Mary’s Bay, Mink River, and somg remaiued here. One schooner is loading at St. Andrew’s Point, and another at Aitken’s wharf. We learn that some schooners are loading at Murray Harbor South and Murray River Bridge. The price paid for potatoes ranges from 20 to 22 cents per bushel. So far as we can learn there is very little grain shipped from the surroundings, and the price still con- tinues from 32 to 34 cents per bushel, with- out much demand, although the shipping season is pretty well advanced.—K, C, Ad-

The Prussian budget for the ensuing fiscal year shows a delicit of $10,500,000. Prussia’s contribution to the exchequer of the German Empire is estimated at $5,500,- 000.

The rich Englishman, Thomas Holloway, is erecting at his own expense an institation for the higher education of girls. The build- ing alone, which has been begun, is to cost $1,385,000; it is 410 feet in length.

Dr. Grantham Munton Yorke, Déan of Worcester, fell dead almost at the door of the cathedral ten days ago just as the choir were singing ‘‘J will lay me dewn in peace and take my rest, for itis Thon, Lord, only that makest me dwell in safety.”

An editor having read in another paper that there is a tobacco, which, if a man smoke or chew it, ‘will make him forget that he owes a duilar in the world,” inno- cently concludes that many of his sub- scribers have been furnished with the article.

An increased demand for tonnage is a gratifying feature of the shipping trade. At Quebec there is more freight than can be carried by the vessels in port, and ac- cordingly freights have vanced. A similar report comes from Montreal. The lake trade has also signs of improvement. Sailors are, moreover, receiving higher wages. Although this better condi- tion of shipping affairs has taken plaee at so late a period of the season of navigation, it is nevertheless encouraging, and will stimulate confidence in our lake trade next season. ‘To the people of the Maritime Provinces the advance of ocean freights will not be an unexpected boon.

The Mail in a leader on the Government and the Opposition, referring to Sir John A. Macdonald and some of his colleagues at the Quebec banquet, says :—‘‘ They had no abstract trade problem between Adam Smith on the one hand, and Henry Carey on the other, to serve, but they ould point to the returning prosperity of the country, and to the general content that reigns within its borders, in proof of the sound- ness of 3heir policy, and as a guarantee of the cerrectness of their ‘judgment ;’ and concludes :—‘‘ On the whole, Ministers may, without uncharitableness, compare their position favorably with that of the leaders of the Opposition, who, just now at least, have neither “a sufficient excuse for their appearance before 2 popular andience nor even a raison etre.

The barn of Mr. Daniel McKinnon, of Murray Harbor North, was destroyed by fire on Thursday last, together with all ite contents, consisting of a large and valuable crop and farming implements. The fire originated from matches in the hands of young children. Itis a bitter lesson, and should waru others against leaving these destructive agents in the way of thought- less children.—K. C.
