A great ineeting was held there on the 15th April, for the purpose of; the Queen and Parliament to grant them a representative form of government, namely, a House of Assembly, and en elective Couneil, in lieu of the enti-British system which obtains there of a Court of Polic y (one half being nominated by the Crown, with the Governor presiding over its deliberations.

LATER FROM CALIFORNIA.
By the Steamship Crescent City, which arrived at New Yotk, the 25th May, we are furnished with later dates from California. Gold dust to the value of $206,- 000 was brought by the Crescent City, and a great
umber of nassenigérs. The following review of the markets from the San Francisco Journal of Commerce,
of April 20, will be intetesting to many of our readers who have friends and relatives in California :
jew we gave of the state of affairs in our issue etna teak nea which left here for Panama on the Ist inst., showed that the trade was improving ; that a brisk inquiry for suitable goods was setting in, and that the state of affairs generally was in a satisfactory con- dition’ Many articles of importance, although the stocks are abundant, such as mess pork, butter, cheese, and other articles of this description, meet with a ready sale for at least three times their yalue at the ports from which they were shipped. Flour, the most important article in our market, will soon advance in price. The stocks of lumber, which have accumulated in our market, have rendered the valué almost nominal. Real estate has fallen to at least one third of its former value, and there are very few operations, even at that. Rents have gone down in an equal ratio, and will have to go still lower to bring them on a par with the value of labour. The ac- counts from the mining regions are very satisfactory, and it is believed that of those employed in the opera- tions, the majority are realizing a fair remuneration for their labour.
Cauirornia.—The New York Commercial Adverti- ser of the 27th contains late news from the “ diggings.” Nothing of importance has occurred since the previous advices, but the following extracts from its correspon- dence may be interresting to those who have friends there :— |
The authentic intelligence from the mines is quite as encouraging as ever, and experience in practical min- ing renders the business much less like a lottery than my been. Quicksilver is very gencrally employed, and the permanent wealth of Cal:fornia in its gold bear- ing quartz, is about being developed.
"Where can no longer exist any reasonable doubt that there is room for all the mining population which can possibly arrive in California for years to come; but let every man who indulges an intention or desire to emi- grate hither, count the cost. No one who would not be Willing to labour in all the drudgery of railroad building
in the tropics, should venture upon this arduous occupa- tion. Hard hands, sinews, muscles and stomachs are absolutely essential in gold digging.
Money is more abundant, though the same exorbitant rates are obtained—one hundred per cent. per annum being about the current rate! No failure has occurred since my last report, and inthe legitimate business ranks there is a general mercantile health, based apon acash system of trade. Less confidence in specula- tions is evinced. Real estate and rents are still declin- ing toward a correct standard.
A destructive fire occurred in Sacramento City on the 3d instant. Estimated loss of property $65,000.

bravely.—The banditti succeeded, however, in making themselves masters of the town, and kept possession until half-past six in the evening, when the population being roused, and the few remaining troops re-assembied, the invaders were forced to embark with the greatest ipitation. ‘They carried off with them our valiant ieutenant Governor, and the captain and liewtenant of our little compary of soldiers, but finally left them onthe keys. ‘I'he loss on both sides has been consider- tble, and the pirates carry with them abundant proofs of Spanish valor, and of the dignity with which Cuba is determined to respond to the iniamous traitors and free-booters who have dared to insult its loyalty.
Carture or 1500 Cusan Invaners on tue Sours or Cura.—Wasnineton, May 29.—It is reported here that the Spanish Legation have received despatches, stating that 1500 additional prisoners have been taken off the south coast of Cuba, in two large vessels—the greater part Americans. :
