force party; to identify him in America with Mr, Ford, in Ireland with Mr, Devoy. He has struggled hard with that too famous ‘last link” speech in Cincinnati. Be the truth what it may, the attorney-general’s efforts to elicit what he wants have had but sorry luck. Mr. Parnell’streatmert of the Cincinnati incident is a good example of his more serious style, when he feels him- self at kay. I abridge question and an- awer:

‘** You told my friend, Mr. Asquith, that if you said you would never be content till the last link between England and Ireland was destroyed you might have used qualify- ing words— what were they ?”
Mr. Parnell’s face was queer, perhaps one shade paler. His hand closed on the oak edge of the box till the muscles and veins stood out. His eyes glittered and gleamed. Suddenly his hand loosed its hold; the stooping tigure stood erect as he murmured in his colloquial tone:
‘** Will you read the shorthand report of what I said yesterday ?”
{t was unusual, but “Mr. Attorney could not well retuse, and when he had read it Mr. Parnell answered :
‘*I abide by that. I have nothing to add or alter.”
The attorney-general pressed him, but vainly, and when he had done his best or his worst, matters stood very much as they did before. That Cincinnati speech was thought as likely as anything else to wreck Mr. Parnell in deep water ; but he is still afluat. Mr, Justice Hannen’s face showed how gravely he thought it, and he followed the explanation attentively. He is not to be suspected of sympathies one way or the other, but Mr. Parnell has made such an impression On this austere judge that when the incident was over Sir James looked relieved, or some of us thought he did.

B., one of the Northern veterans in the great American war, has just received a tangible recognition of his services, and in return relieved the groaning vaults of the | Treasury. Buryvep To DeatH.—A woman named Bouchard died in the hospita! at Montreal on Saturday from burns received at her home the previous evening. It appears that she was placing a lighted lamp on the bureau when a small bottle of olive oil fell upon the chimney, causing an explosion and setting fire to the poor lady’s clothes. Her sufferings were very great until reliev- ed by death,
