Sir,—TI have been repeatedly asked by echool boys, both in town and country, if Mr. Edison is not the inventor of the electric light,* telephone, telegraph and what not; and they inform me that their teachers tell them he is.

I have heard that one of our city teachers in an ¢xamination marked a boy corect who brought the answer Edison to the question “Who invented the electric ligh’,” and scored out the one who brought the answer Sir Humphrey Davy. This latter was not absolutely correct but | nearer s® than the other, as Davy was the

| discoverer—in fact the question was wrong. The word inventor can not be applied.

Now, Sir, I don’t wish to detract from Mr. Edison any credit that may be due him; but I think,.in justice, these im pres— sions should be corrected as Mr. Edison does not figure very highly in any scientific | pursuit. DEATH IN THE WEST. Tue many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bovyer, formerly of Southport, but now of Dennison, Texas, will regret to learn of the death of their son, which is announced amongst our ol i:uaries to-day. On leaving Prince Edward Island in 1891 Mr. Bovyer with his wifeandtwosons toek up their residence at Vancouver, B C. Whilethere, Ernest, their youngest son was attacked by pulmonary disease, and his parents removed with him to Colorado, and subsequently to Texas, in the hope that the influence of milder c imates might save his life. But all in vain. ‘The fell destroyer bad marked him for its victim, and all the sacrifices made by his fond parents could vot save bis life. Mr. and Mrs, Bovyer ani their surviving son, Mr. Harold Bovyer, who still lives at Vancouver, have the heartfelt sympathy ot a large circle of devoted friends in this Province in the loss which they have sustained. Marion, the youngest daughter of Presi-

dent aud Mra. Cleveland, was christened at the White House, Washington, last Thursday afternoon. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Dr. Sunderland, who performed the marriage ceremony for the distinguished parents. Marion was a year old last July. Military Commander Madruga defeated a strong party of rebels on Conde Kanche, Havana province. The rebels lost thiriy men killed and wounded. The troops Jost five killed and two missing. The camp of the rebels was destroyed, and a large quantity of arms andammunition, and a number of cattle the insurgents left behind were captured by the troops.
