Consumer Credit Expansion Slows

OTTAWA (CP) —A marked slowdown last year in the expan- sion of consumer credit by retail dealers and finance companies was reported by the Bank of Can- ada Thursday.

The bank’s annual report said this form of credit rose by $40,- 000,000 in the year to $2,008,000,- 000 from $1,968,000,000.

The increase compared with annual increases of $56,00,000 in 1957, of $281,000;000 in 1956 and of $237,000,000 in 1955.

The bank indicated that most of the gain occurred in the last three months of the year.It said there was relatively little change in the first nine months of 1958, apart from usual seasonal fluctu- ations.

Largest ‘form of consumer credit — loans by instalment fi- nance companies, mostly on auto. mobiles—declined by $43,000,000 during the year to $757,000,000 . Small loans companies, on the other hand, had $400,000,000 in credit outstanding at the year’s end, a gain of $36,000,000.
