After Long Years. One hundred and fifty years ago cne of -|the principal settlements of the Acadians in Prince Edward Island was located on the point of land at St. Peter’s Harbor, King’s County; now occupied as a farm by Mr. John Sinnott. Here can be seen signs of the French occupation. The large cellar near the sandhills is where the principal atere was located. Ona knolilof land some distance away stood the church of the set- tlers, where the ‘‘ God’s acre” was situated,

Railway Station at Peake’s.

Sik, —For a long time the people residing at and for many miles around Peake’s have been memorializing the General Govern- ment for a booking station, but for some reason unkuown to them the prayer of their petition has not been granted, conse- quently the business of that section of the country has been retarded, and the people subjected to loss aud inconvenience. Put- lic meetings have been held at different times, and the advantages likely to accrue from the proposed station brought to the notice of the authorities, but it is evident that the matter has not been pushed as energetically as its importance demanded, hence the postponement.

It would be very unreasonable to ask for an expenditure of public money for such a purpose, if there could be the slightest doubt as to the result. But in the case of Peake’s, the most cursory glance at its pre- sent trade and surroundings will show that such an outlay would be a source of revenue to the railway, and an incaleulable benefit to the people. There are several highways —Pisquid, Brothers, Cardigan, Peake’s, St. Patrick’s, Baldwin’s and Stanhope— converging at this point, all of which run through densely populated, fertile and well-cultivated settlements. If provided with a telegraph station at Peake’s dealers could transact business on a larger scale with the farming population for miles around, competition would be more active, higher prices would reward the industry of the husbandman, and larger shipments would swell the earnings of the Railway. At present a large amount of freight is shipped to Peake’s siding, and it is not sur- prising that shippers and merchants are protesting against having their gouds thrown upon an open platform in all kinds of weather. Passengers also feel aggrieved when compelled to stand shivering in and arvund an 8x10 shed. It is safe to assert that if this order of things had been swept awayften or even five yearsago Peake’s would now be a large and flourishing town, whose exports and imports would yield five hun- dred times more revenue for the railway than the existing traftic.

It would oceupy too much of your space to discuss this subject from every point of view; therefore, I would advise those im- mediately interested to call a public meet- ing, before parliament meets, for the pur- pose of pressing their claims ig this.re- spect. They should not be discouraged by past failures, but remember that “‘try again” is an old and reliable maxim. It should also be borne in mind that the ap- pointment of Hon. Mr. Prowse to the Senate is an augury of better things for King’s County; and that when the railway or any other department is presided over by the Premier of the Dominion, we can safely rely upon our claims receiving favor- able consideration.
