Tie above extract from the English paper clearly proves the advaniage of using shovt- horn bulls either for pure breeds—to save one or two years feeding or im raising cross- b-ed animals—which must be our great de- p2mdence for many years, :

A short-horn bull calf bred by R. Brown, sq., of Carleton County, in 1877, made nearly 100 Ibs. per month for the first eight months of i's age.

What Building Associations Do.

The rapid growth of Philadelphia, which, with a smaller population, has nearly twice t@mumber of separate dwellings within its corporate limits that New York aggrega‘es, is due to three things: First, accessibility and level territory ; second, the ground rent system, by which land may be perpet- ually leased on payment of six per cent. In theform of rent ; third, the building assoz1a- ton, by which mechanics and others are become owners of their own dwellings. This system of association has, iwfspits of dull times, kept the building trade active wherever it exists in any large sense. In the towns about Boson, largely in Philadelphia, and in all the mid-Pennsyl- vania towns, such a3 Reading, Pottsville, Harrisburg, ete., it has kept building axtive hy the demand for separate dwellings it creates among the frugal work people.

At St. Scholastique, near Montreal, Paul Leonard, a farmer, 107 years old, resides with his son Paul Leonard, je., who is 85 years old. The father and son served in the war of 1812, and receive pensions from the Government. Their ages have been authenticated. The old man owns the pro- pawty and looks after it, giving instructions to his son. There are five pensioners living in the same neighborhoods whose age range from eight; to ninety-one.
