The Edinburgh Presbytery of the United Prrsbyterian Church of Scotland has passed a resolution recommending the Synod to de- clare thet marriage with a deceased wife’s sister sliall no longer be a bar to member- ship in the Church.

A erovur of English financiers, through Sir A. H. Layard, British Ambassador at Con- stantirople, have offered the Porte a much better financial scheme than that offered by the French syndicate. They also include in their offar a loan of twelve millions.

A quantity of freight is at Pictou await- ing the Northern Light. Much dissatisfac- tion is very naturally felt by disappointed importers. How is it that the Northern Light did not bring the waiting freight over before she went on her experimental trip ?

Many Years Yer.—It is interesting to hear that Lord Beaconsfield, according to the laws of hereditary longevity, has still many years of life to look forward to. His father lived to be eighty-two, and his grandfather, Benjamin Disraeli, to be eighty-six. His mother was only seventy-one when she died, but his father’s grand-mother, Mrs. Seybroot, lived to the age of ninety.

A waaaIsu correspondent has informed the New Brunswick papers that the Legislature of this Province will meet on the 29th February ; and the editors never reflected that this is not leap year. The Legislature will, however, meet on ‘Thursday, the 27th February. The Government had, doubtless, an eye to the fit- ness of things when they fixed the date so close to march.

Tae PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH INCANADA.— A public meeting will be held in Zion Church on the evening of Tuesday next, at 7.30, to be addressed by various members of the Presbytery of P. E. Island for the purpose of stating the nature and claims of the general work of the Church under the General Assembly. The chair will be taken on the occasion by Hon. Col. Gray.

LONDON, Feb. 7,

A Copenhagen despatch says that the Danish Ministers at Berlin and Vienna wil] probably be recalled.

A Vienna despatch says that, as regards the merits of the dispute concerning Arabi tabia, all the neutral powers may be said to favor Roumania, but the case will be- come complicated by Roumania’s hasty ac- tion.

Mrs. Scott-Siddons appeared in the pres- ence of His Excellenoy and H. R. H. at the Opera House last night.

[t is understood that the public will be admitted to the gallery of the Senate Chamber on the occasion of the drawing room to be hed by H. R. H., on the 14th inst. After being presented, ladies and gentlemen will be allowed to pass into the gallery to await the conclusion of the cere- mony.

An international curling match will take place on the 11th inst. between the United States and Canada in Toronto. The Gov- ernor General will take part on the Canada side.

Mr. Perrault, conservative, and Mr. Simon, liberal, were nominated at Charle- voix yesterday for the seat in the Commons left vacant by the death of Mr. Tremblay.

Senater Skead is not likely to be dis- turbed in his seat in the Senate.

Arrived at Queenstown, on the 22nd ult.,

Sehr. Ann, of Charlottetown, before re- ported wrecked, is now stated to have put into Port Hastings, C. B., Jan. 31, leaky, and that the surveyors recommend her cargo to be discharged.

A Dunkirk, France, despatch of the 22nd inst., says: An “‘assistant boat,” in coming into port from the roads, capsized, and all on board, eight men, were drowned. The Capt. of the fnglish barque Areadia, from New York, is said to have been in the boat at the time, but this is uncertain, as no bodies have been found. The Arcadia bel ongs to St. John, and is owned by Taylor Bros. und others. Capt. Dakin is the master.

Marine Disasters in Jaxvary.—The number of vessels hound to or from ports in the United States, reported totally lost and missing during the past mouth is 63, of which 25 were wrecked, 18 abandoned, burned, 1 sunk by collision, 7 foundered and 7 are miss- ing. ‘Lhe list comprises 5 steamers, 6 ships, {8 barques, Il brigs and 23 schooners, and thei total value, exclusive of cargoes, is esti- mated at $1,740,000. Among those lust were the following. owned in the Maritime Prov- inces: Ship Taomas E. Kenney, of Maitland, N. 8., from New York for London; barque Bell Keith, of Windsor, N. S., from Kio Grande de Norte for New York; barque Chili, of Yarmouth, N. S., from Baltimore for Rochefort ; brig Marius Coipel, of Dighy, N. 5., from Charleston for Beaufort, S. C.; brig La Plata, of St. John, N. B., from New York for Bordeaux ; brig Wesley and Seymour, of Parrsboro’, N. 8., from Charleston for Dublin 3] schr. Ann Amelia, of Halifax, N.8., from | New York for St. Pierre. Mig.; schr. Rio, of Shulee, N. s., from Yarmouth for Hillsboro’; schr. Welcome Home, «f St. John, N. **Missine.”—This saddest of all words known to the sailor is now written in the un- derwriters books opposite the good ship “Jean Ingelow,” of Portsmcuth. She sailed from Cardiff, Wales, May 23rd, 1878, for Signapore, aJvoyage which, under ordinary cireumstances, snould have taken from 90 to 120 days. The ship was spoken June 18th in lat. 38 50 north, lon. 13 56 west, and since that time nothing has been heard of her. As it is now almost eight months since she has left port, all hope for the vessel and crew has been abandoned, except the vague, indefinite, sickening hope which so long remains in the minds of ‘the’ nearest friends of those whose fate is shrouded | in so sad a mystery.

The Jean Ingelow was owned, principally, by Capt. J. G. Moss, of Portsmouth, has. al- ways been employed in the East Indian trade, and was considered a fine ship. She was com- manded by Capt. George Tanton, a native cf Prince Edward Island, but since his boyhood a resident of Portsmouth. Capt. Vanton made his first sea voyage in 1558, then being a ship- mate of the writer. He had been some five or six yearsin command when he saikd on his ill-fated voyage. He married a daughter of Washington Leavitt, of York, Me., and by this marriage had a son, now about 6 years of | age. ‘he child’s mother died three or four years ago, and Capt. Tanton married again in Liverpool, just previous to sailing on his last voyage, his wife going with him. The Captain has two brothers in Portsmouth; the mate was also a Portsmouth man, and the uncertain fate of the ship and her crew casts a gloom upon a large circle in this city where so many inter- ested parties reside.— Manchester Union.
