The term had now elapsed, by several days, when Mordaunt Mertoun, as he had promised at his departure, should have returned to his father’s abode at Jarlshof, but there were no tidings of his arrival. Such delay might, at another time, have excited little curiosity, and no anxiety; for old Swertha, who too upon her the office of thining and cenjectur-

ing for the little household, would have con-

cluded that he had remained behind the other

guests upon some party of sport or pleasure.

Mor- daunt’s good humor and News person must indeed have made no small impression on the withered and selfish heart of the poor old wo- man, to induce her to take a course so desper- ate, and from which her friend the Ranzelman endeavored in vain to deter her. To accomplish this purpose, while busied in preparing the table for Mr. Mertoun’s simple and solitary dinner-meal, she formerlly adorn- ed the board with two covers instead of one, and made all her other preparations as if he was to have a guest or companion at dinner.

The artifice succeeded; for Mertoun, on coming from his study, no sooner saw the table thus arranged, than he asked Swertha, who, waiting the effect of her stratagem as a fisher watches his ground-baits, was fiddling up and down the room, ‘‘ Whether Mordaunt was not returned from Burg-Westra ?”

This question was the cue for Swertha, and she answered in a voice of sorrowful anxiety, half real, half affected, ‘‘ Na, na !—nae sie divot had dunted at their door, It wad be blithe news indeed to ken that young Maister Mordaurt, puir dear bairn, were safe at hame,”

‘“‘And, if he be not at home, why should you lay acover for him, you doting fool?” replied Mertonn, in a tone well calculated to stop the old woman’s proceedings. But she replied, boldly, ‘‘That, indeed, somebody should take thought about Maister Mordaunt ; a’ that she could do was to have seat and plate ready for him when he came. But she thought the dear bairn had been lang awa ; and, if she maun speak out, she had her ain fears when and whether he might ever come hame.”’

‘* Your fears?” reblied Mertoun, his eyes flashing as they usually did when his hour of ungovernable passion approached ; ‘‘ do you speak of your idle fears to me, who know that all of your sex, that is not fickleness, and folly, aud self-conceit, aud self-will,is a bundle of idiotical fears, vapours, and _ tremors? What are your fears tome, you foolish old hag ?”

It is an admirable quality in womankind, that, when a breach of the laws of natural affection comes under their observation, the whole sex is in arms. Let a rumor arise ina street of a parent that has misused a child, or a child that has insulted a parent,—I say nothing of the case of husband and wife, where the interest may be accounted for in sympathy,—and all the women within hear- ing will take animated and decided part with the sufferer. Swertha, notwithstanding her greed and avarice, had her share of the gener- ous feeling which does so much honor to her sex, and was, on this occasion, so mueh carried on by its impulse, that she confronted her master, and upbraided him with his hard hearted indifference, with a boldness at which she herself was astonished.

His False Teeth Killing Him.

THE SAl) PREDICAMENT OF A PENNSYLVANIA FARMER.

James Caldwell, a Middlesex farmer, is in all probability the must unhappy man. in Western Pennsylvania. A short time ago the vulcanized rubber plate which held his false teeth in position broke while he was eating, and a piece of the plate, about two inches in length and containing several teeth, down into his stomach. Shortly after he was seized with violent pains approaching convulsions, and since that time his sufferings have been steadily

increasing. He summoned physici but the only consolation they could afford him

was that life might be prolonged a short time, yet fatal results must inevitably ensue. They state that artificial teeth as well as plate are composed of materials which remain obdurate under the most — corrosive acids, hence their dissolution in the stomach or ailmentary track is out of the question. €

The Pheenix Coal Company, which in- tends to operate the Joggins mines, has been granted letters patent. The capital stock is $50,000, in 5,000 shares of $10 each.

Mr. Joseph Gillis, a teamster of Indian- town, St. John, cut one of his fingers while chopping kindling wood one day last week. Lockjaw resulted and he died the following morning.

The gift from President Cleveland to the Pope has arrived at Rome. The present is acopy of the United States constitution, beautifully engrossed and richly bound in book form.

A cyclone tore over the hill in front of Patrick Kieley’s, Baddeck River, C. B., on Tuesday about dinner time, and scattered his fences. It then struck his best barn, and ripped it into atoms, carrying some of the boards as far as the bank of the river.

C. G. Marten, who did business under the name of Marten Brothers, private bankers, a» Leamington, Ont., is alleged tu have absconded, His indebtedness to depositors ces not exceed $2,000 as far as known. It is stated he could not have taken less than $50,000 with him.

Herr Paschke, a Berlin butcher, recently celebrated a curious “ jubilee”—the slaughter of the 100,000th goose in his establishment. He began business in 1869, and on Dee. 2 was able to kill the jubilee goose—a choice specimen, specially fatter.ed for the occasion.

Mr. Lingham, the well-known cattle exporter of Belleville, Ont., has just received through Lord Dufferin the ap- pointment of manager, in India, of the cattle estates of the Nizam of Hyderabad, who will be remembered as having given $2,000,000 towards the fortifications and defence of India a short time ago.

The increase in the public demand for electric lighting all over the United States is far in advance of the expectations of those engaged in the business, and the manu- facturing companies are over-crowded with orders. New York electricians agree that next year will see the biggest boom ever known in the electric lighting business.

Returns from 12 gold mines in Nova Scotia for the month of November last show a total of 2,517 tons of quartz crushed, with a return of 1,055 ounces of gold, valued at $21,100. One mill gives the enormous yield of 191} ounces of gold from 614 tons of quartz crushed, while another the small return of 384 ounces from 299
