The weather here has been fair, clear and calm, but unusually ¢ id. Mercury having been pressed down at times to 30 below zero, with light snow falls, the best of sleighing, good markets and average prices The excitement consequent upon the late Cabinet re construction, and the civic elections has entirely disappeared. Nothing remains to remind us of either, save a shor‘ siviited effusion, at times, from a Dr Douglass of some such arrant sensationalist, who happily for Osnada and ita people general y manage to defeat their own object. All necessary preparations and arrange- ments are being rapidly completed in and about the Senate Chamber and House of Commons for the 26th mst. Islanders and tunnel advocates here deeply regret the action of Mr. Palmer, C. E., in connection with his boring con- tract last season, as they consider Senator Howlan’s great efforts and praiseworthy work of many years, weakened by the adverse course of events, especially so by reason of the fact that part of the Island press seek t» stigmatiza and if possible associate the Seaator's good name with being » party to fraud. Such insinuations are unfair to the Senator, who more than al! othe:s in thejpas: has labored so earnest- ly ia the tuanei proj ct, at great personal cost of both time and money. It isto be hoped that the efforts so profasely put forth by the Senator's enemies, who are also ene- mies to the tunnel scheme, in this case will be promptly frowned down by the people of the Island for whom the Senator has worked so hard and attempted so much, and who at least owe the Senator a debt of | gratitude of no ordinary kind, for what he has done and is atill doing for his home and people,—as no one else could. [here is much speculztion as to the course that Dalton McCarthy, Esq., M, P., is likely to steer when the session opens. Very atale, if not very Tarte-ish material will, it ia said, be used by the party leading the attack on the new cabinet’s policy, as soon as the same is made known.
