High Commissioner, sent 1045 p. m Oct. 10th, 1899.

Her Majesty’s goveroment have received with great regret the peremptory demands of the Sonth African republic, conveyed in your telegram of October, 9th.

You will inform the government of the South Afriean republic, in reply, that the conditions demanded by the goverument of the South African repubiic are euch as their Majesty’s government deem it im: possible to discuss.

SOURIS RACES.

The races held on Souris Driving Park yesterday were a decided success. There wereabout 500 people present including | some 40 who went up on the special! from Charlottetown amongst whom we notic- ed His Honor the Lieutenant Gover- nor, Mesers G. A. Sbarp, J J Davies, James Currie and others. The track was in excellent condition ; but we were sorry to seeso much delay in commencing the first event which necessitated one heat be- ing trotted afier dusk, The officers of the track were Mr. B. H. Ramsey, starter; judges, Messrs J. J. McAdam and Geo,

Essery. Timer, Mr, L. E. Shaw. The firet event celled was the match race, $50 a side, winner to take entire

purse. In this there were three contestante, Prince Regeut owned by Mr, &. Sterns, Progress Lad owned by Mr. Geo. E. McFarlane, and Prospector belonging to Meesrs Matthew & McLean,the last named animal being without doubt one of the finest specimens ot horse-flesh we have ever seen, but entirely tco fleshy for uo'- ting purposes. Prince Regent won the race, but much dissatisfaction was mani- fest when the decision of the judges on ibis matter was given 4s nine-tenths of the people considered that Progress Lad hed won the race fairly without a bitch or breaa. Between the heats of the match race, the three minute class was trotted fora purse of $75,divided, end was won 'n fine style by Mr. Fred. MeDonald’s Par- ker Wilker. In the first heat of this race Brown Bird,owned by Mr. Wood of this city, broke the wheel of the sulky, threw Mr. Wood acd ran around the track for about three-eights of amile before be.ng stopped. At one time it looked very serious for the other drivers, but she was eventually stop- ped without harm except to the sulky. The last event was the Green Race won by Mr. Fred McDonald’s Dawtie. There was also a ceries of bicycle races for a gold medal, but owing to the darkness the jast race, which was two miles, was not finish- ed. Mr. Trev.
