Two youths, sons of wealthy and influen- tial parents, albsconded for the purpose of seeking their fortunes, but were overtaken at Clifton and brought back. They had stolen between them about $180, with which, and extra clothing and revolvers, they intended to buy a ship and become pirates... They hadebought no less than nine revolvers ; $i00 of the stolen money was found on them and returned to the owners, The boys are aged about twelve years, and imbibed their ideas of life from the pernicious novels of the period.

In a quarrel yesterday Wm. Dermott, in Brooklyn, struck his wife on the head with an iron kettle. The injuries wiil probably prove fatal. Dermott was ar- rested.

The final splice in the new French cable was made at 11.30 this morning and com- munication was had with Brest, when con- gratulatory messages were exchanged. The Faraday has had. remarkably good fortune with the new cable, never losing a moment in her successful trip from the moment she started with it until now, when she has completed the last.
New York, Sept. 17.
Max Borger, lottery dealer, under the name of Hockswan & Co., has brought a suit against Postinaster James in the Su- prema Court of the State of New York, for alleged illegal detention of his letters, for which he claims $2,500 damages. Tho case will probably be transferred to the Federal Court. The letters were detained under orders from the Postmaster General, based on the law authorizing him to detain letters concerning lotteries, ete.

Ship ‘Royal Charter,” from Philadel- phia for Antwerp with a cargo of grain, is reported fallen in with at sea, abandoned. She was a fine ship of 1304 tons, owned by Nathaniel Churchill and others, of Yar- mouth, and was insured in Yarmouth offices to tlie extent of $20,000.

The Mayor of Remedies has issued an order, in consequence of disturbances there on the 9th, when the railroad warehouses were robbed, that all establishments must close at ten o’clock with the exception of hotels, cofiee houses and apothecaries shops which are to close at eleven. From dark until daylight no one is permitted to leave tuwn, and all meetings composed of more than four persons are prohibited.

The Mayor of Caibarien has telegraphed to the authorities that the Insurgent Clhicfs Alfredo Perese, Pastor Carillo and Juan Casanova, have surrendered. Great in- dignation is felt at the conduct of some of the ex-chiefs, who, after receiving employ- ment and benefits from the Government, have betrayed their confidence and re- turned to disturb the country by raising an jusurrection. ’

A Local Captain in the American Vice-Admiralty Court.
At the Vice-Admiralty Court, His Lord- ship Sir William Young, delivered an im- portant judgment in the cause of ** Jean Anderson” for wages decreeme in favor of the master for the sum of 432.71 dollars with costs of the suit. The cause was heard before him on the 20th ult., and involves some points not previously raised. He de- cides that the right to proceed in this Court against a ship for wages and disbursements is not taken away by the Dominion Insolv- ent Acts ; and that, although the right of possession and title to the ship passed to the assignee under the writ of attachment and insolvency, yet the insolvency of the owners ipso jucto did not determine the authority and functions of ,the master, or operate as a disinissal to him. Mr. Hi. H. Bligh appeared for the claimant, Captain John Williams, of New Road, Llanelly, and Mr. J. N. Ritchie, Q.C., for the res- pondent, assignee.—N. Y. Herald.
BANKRUPT OWNER AND MASTER'S WAGES. Editor Shipping and Mercantile Gazette.
Sir,—l purchased a vessel, belonging te Sharlottetown, P. E. [., through ithe Agent in England. and signed the agreement 21st of August last, and signed the duplicate on the 28th of the sane month, in presence of one of the owners, to whom I was introduc- ed by the Agent as Capt. Willams who had bought the *‘ Jean Anderson,” ana that I was going out to Prince Edward Island after the vessel, which was then en her way out to Charlottetown, and to take charge of her for the return voyage to England, at a wage of 10] per month until the cargo was discharged, when my Wages were to cease, There was a condition that I was to-come to Prince Edward Island and take charge. of the vessel as Master, but first to bring her to Pictou to undergo repair which was to be be done to my satisfaction, according to the agreement which I signed. The vessel was got ready for sea, when the firm became bankrupt, and the vessel was seized by the creditors. I took charge as Master on the 10th September, and the vessel was seized 10th ef October. I re- ceived orders from the assignee on Decem- ber 7th to make up the accounts of wages of the crew and myself, and to be at the Shipping-office at 2 p. m. and get the crew discharged. I asked the assignee if I was going to be paid eff also. He said that he did not know just then, until he had orders from the official assignee from Charlotte- town, and told me to live on shore, that he would pay for my board, which I agreed to do; butin half-an-hour after he came to ine at the vessel and said that he had coun- termanded his order, saying that I was not the Master of the ‘‘ Jean Anderson” he- cause my name was not on the register, which I did not think re- quisite or customary until the vessel was cleared and ready for sea, and, of course, the former Capiain’s name, whe brought the vessel from England to Prince Edward Island, was upon the register. The other Captain was removed to another vessel which was at another port. When he was proceeding to sea with the other vessel she struck on the bar and commenced to make water, and he made his way for Pictou in distress. Next day, after he had arrived in Pictou, his vessel was also arrested by the creditors. After he had laid at Pictou for some time his crew were also paid off, but he (the Captain) was kept on and got his wages and board paid by the assignee, who refuses me wages or any bvard since my crew have been discharged. He ac- knowledged meas Master until my crew were discharged, which was done by me; and he paid my beard from the 7th to the 19th of December last, and he refuses to pay me any wages or board since that time. i am here destitute and penniless since 19th December last. What am Ito do to re- cover my wages and board, and also the advances I made tothe crew, which wére paid according to my accounts?

Tue Canapa Pacrric Rartway.—It ia said that there are now employed on sec- tion A, Canada Pacific Railway, 1,200 men, and on section B., 1,000 men. The work of excavating is being rapidly proceeded with, and will be continued during the winter months. It is expected that both
contracts will be completed before the stipu-
lated time. On the Manitoba section, Mr. John Ryan has asmall force of men getting out ties and otherwhise preparing the way for active operations.
