TWO MADE HAPPY.

An event of no ordinary importance took place at the residence of Mr Donald Me-~ Eacherno, Summerville, on Wednesday evening, Oct 19, when his third eldest laughter, Laureita, was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Mr Peter H Stewart, Mt Albion, by Rey W H Spencer, Montague.

Miss Ida McEachern, sister of the bride, acted the part of bridesmaid, while Mr John R Stewart supported the groom.

OQoly about forty of the nearest friends of the contracting parties were present. After doing ample justice to the various dainttes customary on such occasions, a few pleasant hours where whiled away in music and games, when the happy couple left, amid showers of rice, for their new home in Mt. Albion, accompanied by the best wishes of a host of friends for a long and happy wedded iife.

The wedding presents were mumeroue, ornamental and useful, thus ehowing the high esteem in which the bride was held. Congratulations,

Lord Minto will bring to Canada as his military secretary, Major L. G. Drummord of the Scots’ Guards, who has just returns ed from the expeditiow to Omdurman. Major Brummond joined the army ‘n 1879, and served in the Bechuanaland expedition in 1884 under Sir Charles Warren. He will be the second representative of the Scots’ Guards at Ottawa this year, Lieut. Bell, General Hnutton’s A. D.C., being

another Officer from that regiment.

How Rats Multiply.

In this city rats are found in cons{é- erable numbers, the brown rats predom- tmating on the ships and wharfs, ths ‘black rats in the stores and warehouses, and the Alexandrian rats being limited to the holds of the ships that come from scuthern ports. Weasels and ferrets are bred to keep down their numbers. The fecundity of the rats is so great that in afew years they would overwhelm a whole city if they were net kept down by artificial means. One pair will rear four or five families of 10 to 15 to each litter in one year, and in six months these young ones are ready to repro- duce. Thus one couple in tke course of three years could raise a population of several hundred thousand if not re straimed by any destructive measures.— New York Sun.
