Augustine Cove Notes. The farmers of this section have com- menced cutting their hay.
We are pleased to state that Augustine Cove can boast of having some of the finest barns to be seen in this Province. A glance at the barns owned by Messsrs G. W. Cameron, N. F. McFadyen, Solomon Bell and others would convinee a person of the apparent prosperity of the farmers of this vicinity; while the cozy dwelling houses of this section ares model of neat- ness and perfection.
We regret to learn of the resignation of Mr. J. P. Hood, who has been teaching in this district for some four or five years. Mr. Hood, while teaching this school, has always done his utmost to instruct his pupils in tbe branches of education: and it is with pleasure that we state that his effortsahas met with the success they so well deserved. He has accepted an offer of em- ployment ia the Pioneer office at Summer- side.
Mr. Daniel Cameron, our village Smith, is doing « rushing business in his line. He also has in course of erection a large dwell- ing house which, when completed. will be a model of architecture.
We are pleased to note that Captain J. G. Sheriff, of No. 8 Company, 82nd Batt., returned from Camp Brighton highly pleased with the manner in which his corps acquitted themselves. Mr. Sheriff is teacher of the school at North Carleton, and is highly esteemed by his pupils and the members of his corps.

The Great Heat of Siberia.
Siberia is commonly regarded as a region of ice and cold, but according to Mr. George Kennan it is, in summer time, about as hot a country asthere is on the face of the globe. In one of his remarkable Siberian narratives, given in the Century Mugazine, Mr. Kennan thus relates one of his hot weather experiences : —
‘** The farther we went up the Irtes’h the hotter became the weather, and the more barren the steppe, until it was easy to imagine that we were in an Arabian or a north African desert. The thermometer ranged day after day from 90 to 103 degrees in the shade; the atmosphere was suffo- cating ; every leaf and every blade of grass, as far as the eye could reach, had been ab- solutely burned dead by the fierce sun- shine ; great whirling columns of sand 100 to 150 feet in height swept slowly and majestically across the sun-scorched plain ; and we could trace the progress of a single mounted Kirghis five miles away by the cloud of dust which his horse’s hoofs raised from the steppe. I suffered intensely from the heat and thirst, and had to protect my- self from the fierce sunshine by swathing my body in four thicknesses of blanket, and putting a big down pillow over my legs. | could not hold my hand in that sunshine five minutes without pain, and wrapping my body in four thicknesses of heavy woolen blanketing gave me at once a sensation of cooiness. Mine was the southern or sunny side of the tarantas, and I finally became so exhausted with the fierce heat, and had such a strange feeling of faintness, nausea and suffocation, that I asked Mr. Frust to change sides with me, and give me a brief respite. He wrapped himself up in a blanket, put a pillow over his legs, and managed to endure it untilevening. Fami- liar as | supposed myself to be with Siberia, i little thought, when I crossed the fron- tier, that I should find in it a north African desert,with whirling sand columns and sun- shine from which I should be obligvd to protect ny limbs with blankets.”

A boy almost inevitably fails in charac- ter and culture who misses the discipline of the school; but if he be a genius and main- tains a good character he ripens faster, is keener, and uften stronger in thought the less schooling he has. This not only holds true of the genius, of whom the world has all too few, but it is true of many a ‘“* street Arab,” who has wit enough to puzzle many many a scholastic. Probably one in a thousand is as well offZoutZof school as in, but there is an element of rugged thought that the street trains to that the school does not. Reeognizing this, let us be care- ful to develop strong thought as well as culture in the schools, remembering the dude is more helpless and heartless than the boor.— Ez.

News Notes.
The title of the eighth wonder of the world is said to belong fairly to the great bridge over the Firth of Forth at Queens- ferry, now nearing completion. Its three cantilevers and girders, if set on land, would be three times as high as the Eiffel Tower. Its length, however, which is a mile without, or a mile and a half with the viaducts, is not sv remarkable as its height and vast proportions. Fifty thousand tons uf the finest steel have been used in its con- struction.
A sea turtle ten feet long, five feet wide, and weighing 1,000 lbs., was caught recent- ly in trap off South Harwich, Cape Cod. This monster is estimated to be fully 200 years old. As it stands, the distance be- tween its fore flippers is over ten feet.
The largest organ in the world has just been constructed in England, for the Town Hall of Sydney. N. S. W., at a cost of
$75,000. The instrument has 126 sounding stops, and possesses the extraordinary
novelty of a pedal reed stop of 64 feet sounding length. The wind supply is
maintained by 4 gas engine of great power,
