One of the strongest proof of the worth

of Oddfellowship is the character of the vast

majority of its members, and the tenacity

with which many prominent men cling to

it. We have in our ranks men of the very

finest intellect, statesmen, merchants, liter-

ary men and representatives of all respect- able classes. Some of these brethren have

grown gray in the service of the Order.

They are men who regard life as exceeding-

ly practical, and they would net remain in Oddfellowship if it were not practical. An opponent of the secret orders once said that their secret work was “a stupendous mass of weary nonsense,” It is likely that he knew nothing jat all about the matter. But how dves such a man account for the fact that men who are as brainy as himself, and just as practical, love Oddfellowship. We are willing to admit that they are not attracted wholly by the ritual, though that is a3 beautiful as truth clothed in beautiful,

elegant expression can make it. But the men who understand the workings of Odd- fellowship would love it if it had no ritual and uo line of instruction except that it was the duty ot every Ouddfellow to visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead, and educate the orpban. While the ritual is as beautiful as the Bible, from whose ‘pages its brilliant truths are drawn, and beautiful as the finest sermon that was ever preached, it is the woak of Oddfellowship, ana not its sentiment that commends it to
