Distribution: Northern Canada south throughout North America. Also West Indies, Peru, and Western Chile. Northern birds migrate south in winter.

Nest: Scrape on ground, sometimes lined or with ornamented rim. Grasslands, cultivated fields, even lawns and flowerbeds.

Eggs: Usually 4, light buff, well marked with blackish brown.

Diet: Insects, spiders, molluscs, crustaceans, worms.

Song: Typical call "kill-dee". Also uses trilling and other notes.

Size: 23 to 28 cm (9 to 11 inches).
