Tue services in St. Joseph's Convent last evening were largely attended. Rev. J. A. Macdonald, of St Danstan’s College, cele- brated Benediction, and Rev. A. J. McIntyre delivered » good practical sermon. The singing throughout the evening was excellent, particularly the duet, ‘* Justus ut Palma,” by Miss Newbery and Prof. Caven. We omitted stating yesterday that the Ladies of the Sodality of St. Joseph had, at their reception after services in the morning, presented Rev. A. J. McIntyre with an address, to which he suitably responded.

It isa singular fact that the cheapness of an article should ever temporarily retard its sale, and yet that was the experience of Messrs, Tuckett & Son in the introduction of their now celebrated ‘‘Myrtle Navy” tobscco. People who had been in the habit of smokieg the finest Virginia tobacco, could not for a time be made to believe that they were offered the same article at about one half the price, and it was only by slow degrees that they were induced to put the question to the test of an actual trial. When they did adopt that test, nowever, it never failed to satisfy them.

We learn that on Tuesday night last, a middle-aged man, with bushy whiskers and a cap of the “‘bucko” patterp, succeeded in making himself exceedingly obnoxious to some of the residents of the Western end of the City. Between nine and ten o’olock he knock- ed at the door of the residence of Wm. Me- Neill, Rochford Steet, and asked for some in- formation concerning a man named Crosby, SicNeill told him he knew nothing at all about Crosby and the visitor departed growling lou‘ly. From there he went to the residence of Mr George Colyer, who resides a short distance from Mr McNeill, on the same street. He rapped st the door and on its being vpened walked boldly in and ex- pressed his intention of remaining for night. To this Mr. Colver, who was par- tially undressed preparatory to retiring for the night, objected, but the visitor imtimated that hecame to stay and intended doing so. Mr. Colyer thereupo seized hold ef the man and forcibly ejected him He hung about out- side for some time and it is supposed that he isthe eame individual who later, on in the

At a meeting of the Dominion Artil'ery As- sociation in Ottawa, on the 18th, Lord Lans- downe delivered an address of encouragement Lieut Col. Oswald was elected President, and Lieut, Colonels Stevenson of Montreal, Mowbray of Halifax, Peters of London, and Irving of P. E. Island, Vice-Presidents of the Association, Lieut. Col. Armstrong, of New Brurswick, was elected a member of the Council.

We are sorry to learn by a recent letter from Bourdeanx, France, that Joseph Cameron, well-known in this city, and a sailor on board the George Peake, is miss- ing from the ship and it is supposed he has been drowned. It appears that the regular cook had /eft the ship and Cameron was placed in charge of the galley. One day while the Capt., was ashore, Cameron left the ship saying he was going to visit some acqnaintances on board the Lucy Pope, another Island vessel in port at the time. He remained on board the Lucy Pope until 10 o’clock at night, when he left to return to his own ship, since which time nothing has been heard of him. It ls sup- posed that in the darkness he walked over the pier and was drowned. The Captain and crew instituted a search for the missing man, but up to the time the letter was written nothing had been heard of him.

Horse Theft and Forgery.

A Truro horse stealing and forgery case was brought to light at Moncton, yester- day. It appears that on Thursday last a man named A. C. Slack, of Truro, drove to Moncton witha horse and sleigh. He went to an auctioneer and on Saturday sold the sleigh, horse. harness and buffalo by public auction for $51. W, Fulton and E. Lockett of Truro, reached Moncton at noon yesterday from Amberst and ravealed the fact that the horse and rig had been stolen from Fulton, while Lockett had been siuck for a hundred dollar uote, to which Siack had attached his brother’s name. Slack’s brother is a respectable [resident of Truro. The sleigh, harness and buffalo were recovered, but the horse was resold and is nowin Bay Verte. Slack was ac- companied by a woman, said to have de- serted her husband and children in Pictou. They left home on Sunday morning via St. John, and are doubtless across the line ere this. Slack, who is a horse dealer, had hired the horse from Fulton for a week, aod the time being up his suspicions were aroused.—St. John Sun

| Anoth:r Man Gone Wrong.

The ledger keeper of the Montreal Banque Nationale, Gustave Mercier, has absconded, after victimizing the bank to ,the amount of several thousand dollars, | About nine weeks ago the management began to have suspicions of the ledger and check keeper and a watch was kept on his movements. A few days afterwards he was suddenly changed to another position, and fearing discovery he made preparations for flight and the following day was not at his post in the bank. An examination re- vealed the fact that he had been carrying on a regular system of forgery for some time. The forgeries, so far discovered, ;amount to ever $2,000, but it will take }some time before the total amount will be | known with certainty. Mercier is about 30 years of age, belongs to a most respectable family and had been employed in the bank over twelve years,
