At Summersipe.—The Summerside confer- ence of St. Vincent de Pau! will give a concert ia the Market Hall at that place on St, Patrick's nigh’, for which an excellent pro- gramme has been made ready. ‘Tha address on the occacion will he given by Rev. J. A. Macdonald, of Miscouche.

St. Drysran’s Carneprat.—The third of the special sermons on *“The Sacraments” was given last evening by Rev. Allan Macdona!li, of Fort Aagustaz, the ‘Blessed Eucharist” being the sacrament considered. The rev. gentleman handled his subject in an able manner. There was » large congregation.

Fox rae Poor —-At High Mass in St. Duns’an's Cathedral, on St. Patrick's Day, & collection will be tsken up in aid of the funds of St. Vincent de Paui Society. This Society has been doing a good work in the mitter of reliewing the poor, and it is sin- cerely hoped that the ovllection on ihe 17th will be a Iurge one, as there are very many poor peop'e ia the city at the present time.

os A Brio Famity.—A véry poor man named Mersereau died the other day at Weldford leaving eighteen children. He had twenty- taree by his last wife, besides others by = partners of his joys and sorrows.

The family is so large that there is no room for the cow, and, aa there is no barn to keep it in, it is installed in the porch, They lived on a farm until recently, when the house was burned acd they moved to the villsge. Mersereau is asid to have given a deed of this farm of 300 «crce ta a Weldford merchant for a cooking s'oye and a barrel of flour. The widow and the eighteen orphans are very destitute —Chatham World.

_ Sin, low have you with the rest of our citizeus, enjoyed wading through the ponds of water at our street corners, for the last few days. Can you imagine eight of our good business men, elected to look after the interesta of our town, men carefully selected, ani even selected by a» law spec- ially prepared for the better government of Charlottetown, could have « petty squab- ble over the loaves and fishes civic to con- tinue such a length of time. If a number ot our small boys were piaying a game of marbles, 1 can imagine one or two little fellows pulling out and eaying, ** well I will never play with you again;” but from good, sensible, energetic men, not playing city politics with four other men equaliy good, for fear of being beaten by the sasting vote of our worthy Mayor, who, from his long experience in public life, should be more than competent to decide so small a point.

Come, gentlemen, don’t be flies on the

wheel ; step up and cast your votes. If you are beaten, many a good man has met a similar fate. We will look back at your recorded vote, and try you all in the balance of pnblie opinion before we are called on again either to send you back to give you another opportunity e:ther to play aa chil- dren, or send you back to play with your own children around your firesides, where you are lords and masters, Now, I for one do not care what men are employed to do the city work, nor from whom they rent their properties, nor in what places of business they trade, nor what churches they attend, nor whether they are for or against the Scott Act. We want our city matters attended to,—and if the present contingent are not capable of acting more like men, why, sendin your resignations at once, gentlemen, and Jet the business go on.

A Dtsaprorntep Matrpgn,--The Halifax Mail says: Another case in which wounded love plays an important part was commenced yesterday in the Supreme Court. The writ was issued yesterday morning and ere the close of the day the alleged false lover was made aware of the fair one’s inteations. The plaintiff, who teeks damages for breach of promise of marriage, is Miss Ellen Me- Carthy, a maiden of nineteen summers. The defendant is Charles Henry Webber. Miss McCarthy claims that Webber paid her attention for many months, and that hs promised to#marry her. The wedding dsy was fixed and all preliminari-s arranged, but when the day arrived the fair one was dissppointed, as Charles had changed his miod. Miss M Carthy places damages at $50@. The case will be tried at the next sitting of the supreme court.
