No Recognition for Students

Under a five year commit- ment beginning in the school year 1985-86, each full time student of UPEI will donate five dollars a year to the renovation of Main Building. This amounts to over 50,000 dollars in total. A con- siderable donation. Yet, the stu- dents are in no way, recognized for their generosity.

A pleaque on the wall inside the front doors of the Main Build- ing gives thanks to, and recog- nizes teh contributions of govern- ment of PEI, the public and many corporations.

If they wish students may have their five dollars contribu- tion repended, but many students will not bother, so donations will probably equal at least 45,000 ; dollars. For a sum of money this high the plaque inside the main

doors should be changed to in- clude the students of UPEI.

Second World Was to supply Canadian forces overseas. Over two and a half million bottles of blood were processed to help in- jured soldiers and civilians.

Since that time, any advances in science and medicine have made transfusion more efficient and have produced many new blood products. Today, through one of the most efficient bolun- teer blood donor systems in the world, the Canadian Red Cross is able to provide blood and blood products free of direct charge to patients in some 900 hospi- tals across Canada. Every day, the Canadian Red Cross requires 5,000 blood donors to meet the demands across the country. In fact every 20 seconds someone in Canada needs blood or blood products.

Blood connot be replaced by anything other than blood. It has

only one source — people. Donat- ing a unit of blood gives some- one in need a new chance for life. It may not be a dramatic act of heroism, but the result is the same. Donors who give reg- ularly are the silent heros. They may never know the name of the person they have helped, but that doesn’t diminish their ac- complishment. And to the acci- dent victums or surgical patients that receive their blood, they are truly heros.

The University of Prince Edward Island will host a Red Cross blood donor clinc in the gymnasium on Thurs- day, October 5 from 2 to 4 p-m. It takes just 45 minutes on average, from registration to relaxing afterwards, to give one unit of blood. Please give “the gift of life.” Make time to become one of the 200 donors needed to meet this clinic’s objective. First time donors and donors from out—of—province are asked to bring identification.

Student Exchange Information Night

An Information Night has been arranged for all past par- ticipating exchange students and all interested students for Octo- ber 16th at 7:00 pm. It will be held in room 102 of the Robert- son Library. The evening should run for about an hour or so.

All past exchange partici- pants are invited to share thier experiences from their exchange — good and not so good. There are four International Exchange Students studying at UPEI this term and they will hoin us to share their experiences and to talk about their own home coun- try and university. These uni- versities include the University of Frostberg, Unversity of Dundee — Scotland, and the University of South Flordia.

Interested students who would like to participate or have questions about the ISEP program or one of the other uni- versity exchanges, are welcome to attend. This awareness night is mainly for you. Drop in and fiind out what a super year you could have while studying abroad. the experiences are endless.

Debating Society

The UPEI Debating Society welcomes everyone interested in debating and public speaking to out introductory meetings, which are held every Wednesday at 3:30 pm in Main 311. At every meet- ing we give instruction and prac- tice in debating to new mem-

bers. We especially urge everone who has never done public speak- ing or debating before an audi- ence. Everyone in the society is free to progress at their own rate and no one is ever pressured to speak. We are a small group and need new membership. By join-

ing us, you can improve dramati- cally your ability to communicate orally. As well, by learning to debate with us, you can increase your value in the job market, and develop more self-confidence. Think it over we’ll be happy to see you!

Comic Subversion

Today I shall discuss a field which has, in the past few years become very interesting. the in- dependent publishers. an inde- pendent, in the comic industry, is any company that isn’t Marvel, DC or some other old, tired stan- dard. Independent comics range from outright parody of the stan- dards to total indifference, “Just doin’ it cause it’s there.”

In some cases, independently produced comics have changed the standards. In terms of an excellent, if confusing title, I’ll refer to “Cerebus” the ardvark. The comic that shows that comics don’t have to make sense. I liek the Masked Man, from Eclipse. It’s a smoothly drawn cleverly scripted comic dealing with very human situations. Thus, it doesn’t sell.

Lone Wolf & Club remains the only

“Ninja” title I can stand. the flood of Ninja/Samurai comics, the “Japanese invasion”, consist- ing of slash—-panels and dock- yard dialog, has gone to a well de- served resting place: Stuffing for cheap furnature.

Has anyone read Badger or the Realm or Elf—-Lord? If you lie art (Elf-Lord), total insan- ity (Badger), or fantasy (The Realm), then without these, your life has no meaning!

on a more contemperary note, although Marble Comics are still a block of insanity, DC has taken the special—format/direct sales/mature-reader comics to new highs (and new lows, a 15 Sonic Disrupters). | Mainwhile, Muddled Comics produce “Acts of Vengence!!”.

Boring!!!!!
