CuRsED Gop AND Became Dums.—A Potts- town (Pa.) despatch reports: *‘ John Chana, @ hopeless paralytic, aged thirty-five, was found dead this forenoon on the floor of his hovel, with a leather strap loosely fastened around his neck, Suicide is the generally ac- cepted theory. Until recently, he was a fine specimen of physical manhood. It is related that one day he cursed his Creator in a most terrible manner, when he fell over, struck dumb. and paralyzed from head to foot.

Lecture 1s St. James Hati.—The lecture of the Rev. W. W. Brewer in St. James’ Hall last evening, on ‘The Idioseyncrasies of great men,” was fairly well attended, not- withstanding several other attractions. T. C. James, Esq., — the chair. The great men referred to by the lecturer belonged to every age of civilization and to every exalted sphere oi human exertion; it was in chaste language, well delivered. Altogether, it was a splendid lecture.

PurLHARMONIC SocteTy.—The practices of the Philharmonic Society are marked by deep enthusiasm; and at last night’s gathering, with the valuable addition of Miss McDonald, Messrs. Vinnicombe, Fletcher and Watson— the latter gentleman presiding at the organ —much excellent work was done. This flourishing society, which is now so full of promise, gained largely by the addition to its sctive members of Mr. H. 8. Heartz, the bril- liant and thorqughly musician-like young or- ganist of the Methodist Church. The society « concert, which is te be held on the 19th inat., promises to be very good. We understand that an orchestral practice, in preparation therefor, is to be held in the Philharmonic Hall on Thursday night at 8 o'clock. The conductor is hoping to begin work upon the magnificent sacred cantata by Sir Richard Sterndale Bennett, ‘*The Woman of Samaria,” as soon as possible after the society's first concert, with a view of producing it at the &nal concert of the season: '
