About 2 weeks ago our friends at Island Cablevision made some adjustments to the FM band on it’s cable signal. The result - a clearer, sharper signal for CIMN! If you’ve never listened before, now’s your chance to hear our unique and exciting music mix. We’re an enlightened alternative to commercial radio.

To tune us in all you have to do is take your Island Cablevision cable and connect or merely make contact your FM antenna (or some stereos have a jack to hook up your cable). Then turn to 102.3 on your FM dial and prepare to be amazed by PEI’s only campus/community radio station. On Thursday, October 25th, Linda MacCrae, accordion player, bass player and vocalist for Spirit of the West was interviewed by the station management, just a half-hour before Spirit of the West played at the Halloween pub at the Barn.

CIMN: What type of band is Spirit of the West, and what are your influences?

SOTW: It’s sort of a blend of folk and rock with some Celtic influences. Everybody (in the band) has

quite a diverse field of stuff that they listen to. CIMN: You have in the past and continue to play at a lot of festivals as well as doing a lot of touring. Are you primarily a live band? Are you two different bands live and in the studio?

SOTW: We try, it’s a really hard thing trying to get the live feel when you do an album, but I think the last one (Save this house) was as close as we’ve come. The live thing is definitely a lot of fun and we enjoy doing it. Hopefully with the next album we'll try to get even more of the live thing into it. CIMN: What can someone expect when they come to see you live?

SOTW: Ah..well...hopefully lots of good music, a lot of energy and hopefully a good time.

CIMN: What events usually inspire the band’s songwriting?

SOTW: I’m not one of the principal songwriters, but I know that John (Mann) and Geoffery (Kelly) a lot of things they write about are from personal experiences or else something that was concerning them at the time, something that moved them to write a song. But they don’t just jump on the bandwagon of what’s happening now. We get a lot of people saying, why don’t you write about this, but it just loses its power when you take a headline out of the newspaper everyday.

CIMN: When they write, do they start with music or lyrics?

SOTW: It varies..
