Tue second English Mail for October arrived here in the steamer by the usual route from Pictou, on Saturday evening last, bringing little news of interest.

The King ofthe French had arrived at Portsmouth, where being welcomed by the British people to their shores, he soon afterwards started for Windsor, and was received by Queen Victoria in a most engaging and hospitable way, due only to the distinction of Royalty.

Another outrage on a British national Oﬁicer has occurred at Tahiti. The French were again the aggressors—but the affair will not likely be hushed up as was the case of Mr. Pritchard—the Go- vernment of France will, in duty and ho- nor bound. see the necessity for remov- ing the officers at least, who thus so dar- ittgly insult the Queen of England's ofﬁ- cers in thejust discharge of their duty.

On Saturday last the St. George ar- rived not only with the English mail ra- ther unexpectedly, but with the oyster craft in tow, and with its adventurous crew in safe custody, whom she captur- ed en route to Pictou. It appears in- deed that the hand of Divine Providence was pointed to the arrest of the oﬁ'endcr, and that a more severe punishment should not at present overtake him; but that he should be placed before thcjus- rice and mercy of the civil law. The wise man has said that the “ way qf transgressors is hard,” and how truly it is exempliﬁed in the fact, that havingtlte advantage of a very favourable wind that would waft any other vessel. engaged in a better cause, speedily through the Gut of Cause, or to a shelter frottt the “ stormy blast,”—so little was her pro- gress, that she was captured, after she had escaped for tttore than a week, with- in 60 miles from the harbour where the murderous act was committed. The same vessel is said to have been nearly run down, in the night, by the St.George, on her passage to Miramichi a few days before.

It was ﬁnally arranged that the smug- gler should not escape if it were possible to prevent it—Mr.Tanton having died of his wounds, and Mr. Scales still lin- gering in a sad state. The lion. T. ll. lIaviland, accompanied by John Morris. Esq. was therefore disposed to proceed to Pictou in search of the vessel. and to bring the offenders to justice. In this laudable undertaking he sought not long in vain—for scarcely had the steamer passed Point Prim era the suspicious ves- sel was discovered and taken.
