HILYARD STEYNS REPORT.

A Bloemfontein correspondent

I have had the good fortune to trav- el three hours with Mr. Hilyard (Hal- hart?) Steyn, brother of the ex-Presi- dent of the Free State, who is proceed- ing to Cape Town onparole. I found Mr. Steyn extremely courteous and he was by no means averse to entering in te conversation, and to yiviug free ex- pression to his views on the sitatton. I may state that in appearance Mr. Steyn is as nearly as possible typical of the successful burgher farmer, and appears to be possessed of much strength of character, is generally broad-minded in his views, and frank in the expressien of them.

He told them that up to the actual moment of the despatch of the Boer ultimatum to Britain he considered war improbable. He was convinced that the greatest good-fellowship had always existed between the Orange Free State andthe British, and had never heard a single complaint of the alleged arbitrary, British treatment. On the contrary there was genuine good feeling existing between the two races. Mr. Steyn stoutly denied that racial hatred or bad blood would exist after the war as far as his countrymen of the Free State are concerned. He would not listen to any imputation up- on the character of his brother, the ex-President, and with much heat de- fended him in his policy with regard to the war,
