We are indebted to Dr. R Health and Statistical Officer, for the in teresting letter and abstracts of the return of Mortuary Statistics for the city of Charlottetown, from the Ist of June, 1883. to the 31st December 1884, which appear elsewhere. Itis the first time

Mortuary Statistics have been published here, and their publicatioa makes known the important fact, that the rate of mot tality in Charlottetown, is much lower than any other city in the Dominion, Thts speaks voinms for the healthfulness of our city; aud proves that with our meagre sanitary regulations, we owe a great deal to a salubrious climate.

In 1883 Montresl, with a population ot 148,616, bad 4,596, giving a yearly death ratio per thousand of the popula tion of 80°925; Toronto, with a popula tion of 94,216, had 22-405; Hamilton, with e population of 38,163, had 786 deat}s—ratio 20.595: Halifax, 37,566 Population, had 735 deaths—ratio 19°565: Ottawa, 28,764 population, haq 774 deaths—ratio 26- 943; St. Jeno. N.{B., 27,188 population, had 29%" deaths —ratio 22031; and Charloftetown. with a population of 10,- RT, had, in 1883, a yearly death rate per 100 of population of 15-6, aud in | 1684, 14:8. This shows a large per- centage io favor of Charlottetown.

MORTUARY STATISTICS.

Str, —In compliance with your request, lL have now the pleasure to furnish you with the following Abstracts from the Keturns of the Mortuary Statistics of this city, dating from the commencement of their collection in June, 1883, to December, 1884.

It has not been altogether an easy task to select those statistical figures and facts, which are of the greatest practical impertance iu a sanitary point of view, and to compile them in a form suitable for insertion in the columns of a newspaper, so as to present the information desired to >e conveyed in a sufticiently clear and concise tuanuer. I trust, however, that the fullowing tabular statements of the facts will not be altogether uninteresting ur uninstructive.

Table I. has been made to contain monthly details of the deaths caused by diseases of the Zymotic class, which are originated avd propagated by specific germs, or certain impuritics lodged upon the surface, or festering below the surface of the soil, and which, being floated upon or exhaled into the atmosphere, or mingled w:th the water or food, ultimately tind their way through either the respiratory or digestive track into the sys- tem, and there become sources of diseases more or less infectiousand fatal. These disea es are, of course, altogether or to a great extent preventible, or their intensity and fatality capable of being largely modified, by proper sanitary measures ; or, on the other hand, they may run riot and slay their victims, purely for want of proper sanitary regulations Vhe facts, therefore, which this table presents ars Worthy of being carefully weighed, and should be allowed to speak for thempse}ves in all considerations or discussions upon the sanitary condition of thje¢ity, either considered alone or im comparison

with other cities. Sych comparisop, made with reference to the past year, especially with regard to the mumber of deaths from diarrhceal affections, would gartainly not lead to any conclusions unfavorable to Charlottetown. The

\ireely duuinished death-rate from diseases of the zemotie class, during the summer of L884, as compared with 1883, is probably attributable, in a great measure, to the salu: tary influences of the cool weather, and the unusually frequent and abundant rains ol former season.

Vable Il. gives a summary statement of the deaths from all the kiown causes. it will be seen that by far the largest per centage of deaths from any one order of disease, is from the Tubercular, commonly recognized as consumption. This disease, being here- ditary, and materially affected in its development by climate and occupational intluences, it would have been interesting to have tabulated the etatistics of the deaths therefrom, so as to have shewn the particulars regarding race, meteorological variations and occupations, in their relation thereto ; but neither the time nor all the materials

necessary therefor are just now at my disposal. The fivures in Table LIT, have an interest and importance of their own, but which

would be greatly enhanced by a comparison of them with similar statistics of other cities

of the Dominion or elsewhere. This comparison may be made, when the official report

Out of the one hundred and fifty-three deaths which occurred in 1884, thirty-one vere persons whose ages ranged from seventy to uinety-eight years.

The fact that in 1884, consumption carried off the greatest number of vic- tims, appears singular. But consumption

ary and naturally affected in its develop- ment by climate and occupational in- fluences, it would be interesting to tabulate the statement of deaths there- from, so as to show the particulars re- garding race, meteorological variations and occupations, and the relations thereto.

the large increase of expenditure last year was chiefly caused by the Fire De partment and the maintenance of streets. The Fire Department Account exhibits

an expenditure of $5,168.62, which was principally caused by the necessity of procuring a new boiler for the Steam Fire Engine Silsby,

aud repairs costing $1,771.22, a Heater for the Steam Engine Rollo, amounting to $130, and cosis of exchanging Fire Bell $216.03, together with a supply of new Hose, costivg $568,59, making in the aggregate an extra expenditure of $2,685.75.

Some fifty-eight thousand plank, valued at $1.000, were used dur- ing the year for the repair of streets and sidewalks. His Worship thioks the streets are therefore in geod condition, but we believe the majority of our citizens disagree with bim. Our streets

and sidewalks were wuever in a more disgraceful condition than dur- ing the past summer and fall. Plank

sidewalks are as expensive as they are inconvenient, aud His Worship recom- meuds that some other plan of permanent improvement in our sidewalks be adopted.

The election for the incoming Council takes place on the 28th inst. It is there- fore very desirable for citizens to give the report of the City Government for 1884, just issued, their consideration.
