There had been a long drought. my after day there had been no rain. not even I little we drop. The earth had become very. Very dry. The green grass had grad. ually turned brown and become too dry to be good eatinl 101' those who live on grass. The Smiling Pool had become so small that Jerry Muskrat and Nlrs. Jerry had had to leave their house and go down to the Big River. Everybody was suffering because of the heat and lack of water.

Then one day Stickytoes the Tree Toad was heard calling. A lot of people thought he was cali- mg rain. No one can call rain. It simply cannot be done. But when shortly after Stickytoes began to trail clouds appeared coming up in iltc blue, blue sky a lot of folks heltcved that it was because of Stit-kytoes' calling that the clouds had come.

At first the clouds were small. white and fleecy. Then they be- gap to grow bigger and bigger. thicker and thicker, darker and darker. By and by they turned very dark indeed. Then rain began in fall. At first there was a thund- erstorm, but after awhile the thun- der and the lightning Pped. The rain didn't. ltlkept rght on all that day and all that night and all the next day. Where there had not bee rain enought, there was now too much rain. The ground had become so dry and hard that the rain could not soak into it fast enough. So it began to run down the hillsides into the brooks.

Way up in the hills it did this on Laughing Brook. Laughing Brook stopped chuckling and be- rash in really laugh. Then it stip- ncd laughing and began to roar. There was too much water. It was coming down the hillsides into Laughing Brook faster than Laughing Brook could carry it down to the Big River. The same thing was happening to all the other brooks. Pretty soon the wat-

It washed away roads and brid- ges. It' spread over all the mead- ows and even on higher lands. It was a great flood all because too much rain fell at one time and for too long. ,

Down on the Green Meadows the water began to trickle down into Johnny Chuck's home. At first he and Pollydldn'tr mnid to 0 much. A little dampness wouldn't hurt them. Butt presently there was too much water. They went up the long hallway to their doorway and poked their heads out It was right up on-their door- step. Polly Chuch had done a lot of worrying. First she had worr- i 1 because there had been no rain fo- so long. Then she had wor- ried because too much rain was falling. Now she had reason to really worry. The water kept creeping up higher and higher over'the doorstep.

"What are we going to do?" sobbed Polly Chuck.

"Swim", replied Johnny Shuck, shortly.

"But I can't swim. I never go in the water!" cried Polly.

"You call swim. Everybody can swim if they have to," said John- ny. He waded out into the water and began to swim.

Pugwoslt Regatta Reported Cancelled

PUGWASH, N.S. tCPle0lficials Friday announ ed cancellation of the fourth annual gathering of the clans and fishermen's regatta, scheduled to be held here Sept, 3.

The event was rained out July I and re-scheduled for Labor Day.

A spokesman said ”a bigger and better event" is scheduled for 1957. No specific reason was given for the cancellation.
