BaNkeExs and others in Winnipeg were advised on the 4th in.t., by Pinkerton’s detec- tive agency of the departure of a strong band of burglars and desperadoes from Chicago for Winnipeg. The force watching at night was doubled, but the public were not warned. The result was that on the night of the 4th the effice of the American Express Company was eutered and the safe blown « pen and $11, 500, principally money from Ontario stolen. The Tribune’s London cable letter Bays: The increasing majority against Gibson's two thirds amendment indicates a shorver session than was expected, Ministers now believing it possible that the Honse will rise at the end cf the month. These calcula- tions are based, not so much on unexpected largeness of mejority as on the disclosure oz the substantial unanimity of the Liberal party in Parliament and its entire nnanim- ity throughout the country in favor of clo- ture as the sole means of restoring legisla- tive efficiency. The much talked of Radi. cal defection has been reduced to ridiculous proportions in the House, while, in the country, not a single Liberal journal has fai'ed to suatain the Ministry. The pres- sure on metybers from constituencies was of a most unusual kind. One Radical be- sides Cowen, who is no longer reckoned a Liberal, voted for Gibson’s amendment. the seceders were nearly all fossil Whigs, of whom most will support the Ministers next week on Northcote's motion to nega- tive the first rule. The Tories, though persisting in obstruc- tion, have lost hope of either securing an important concessioa or of protracting the session. Their whips find increasing diffi- culty in keeping their men in town. Nearly the fall strength of the party voted on Thursday, and will vote once more on the final division on the first rule, but not afterward. The chief significance of Mr. Waddy’s election, in Edinburgh, was the defeat of the Irish faction, which attacked Waddy violently, and falsely accused him of break- ing pledges given to the Irish. The Worlds London special says: The debates in the House, this week, con- tributed still further to depress the Con- servatives by showing them that they have absolutely no leader upon whose tact and courage dependence is to be placed. The report of Allport and Swanbrick on the Atlantic and Great Western Railway, has, for the time, completely demoralized the American market here. The document has fallen on the trustees like a bombshell ; the effect of the charges must be the over- throw of the trustees or an appeal to the courts. Upon the disclosures being made, the first bonds of the company fell 13 per c+nt., but they are now rallying a little in cons: quence of the prospect of a totally new management.

A. M. Sullivan, M. P., lectured in this city to-night. In sketching the work of the Land League since 1879, he declares that in their widest hopes and most ambitious demands they never asked for as much as was given in Gladstone's last act. Already something like 30 per cent. of the whole rental of Irelcnd had been taken fr m the shoulders of the people, which was the greatest and most tremendous revolution ever accomplished by legislative effort in Europe. ‘‘ But,” he continuéd, ** we are not satistiv-d with that; we want arrears wiped off, iniquitous leases annulled and, above all, we want landlords compelled to sell out tu oceupying tenants.”

In calling attention to the advertisemen of the Cauada Life Assurance Association, whieh appears in this issue, we cannot do betcer perhaps than quote the follow- ing from the New York Syectator, an In- surance Journal of high standing, and which speaks volumns for this old and favorit: institution :—The Canada Life has held its thirty-fifth annual, and made the statement fur year ending April 30th, 1882—a statement of which the directors, officers and poiicy- holders may well be proud, and which reflects credit ad honor on Canada, for this institution is one of which no country need be ashamed. {f the directors and manager pursue the same policy in the future which has already pro- duced such gratifying results, the company will be obliged to extend its operations int) the United States and possibly to England, when its development into one of the largest companies in the wor!d will be only a question of time. Already the assets reach the splendid aggregate of over $5,000,000. The statement is, on the whole most satisfactcry, and an annu:l! premium income of nearly three quarters «f a million dollars is a decided!) haudsome showing. The expenses are noi excessive, being about 14 per cent. of the pre mium income. It is also gratifying to learn that the investmenta are not only profit-pro- ducing, but a so upon which no “loss whatever may be feared or expected.” The new feature of paying losses immediately on proof is an extremely wise step on the part of the direc tors.
