Colonel J. G. Fair, of Nevada, who has been visiting the King and Queen of the Sand- wich Islands, relates a pleasant little story of a water excursion which he took with them. When they approached the Island which was their destination, the breakers were found to he s» boisterous that no small boat could land. Not at all discouraged, the King jumped over. hoard, the Queen after him, and both swam with exceeding grace and coolness to the shore,

ONE pay last week a Pictou County farmer drove up to the West River Station, with about a.dozen sheep, with their legs tied, for shipment to Halifax. Just at that moment the Pictou train came in, half a dozen passen- gers jumped on to the platform and with one accord shouted, ‘‘Look out for Naylor !” «Who's Naylor ?' asked the farmer. ‘*Who’'s Naylor |’ was the reply, ‘‘you'll see when you get to Halifax. If you send those sheep to Halifax, with their legs tied, it will cost you more than they are worth.” The honest farmer was open to conviction. “Come to think of it, he had heard of Naylor before. 1n one minute the cords were cut, every sheep was free, and the farmer will never again tie the legs of his sheép and thus. cruelly ill-treat them. This little incident, says the Halifax Herald, shows the vast amount of good already accomplished by the S. P. C. A., and that ‘Naylor's’ name is everywhere a terror to those who ill-treat dumb animals. It would be well if Naylor's jurisdiction was extended to this city. There is here a large field for his labor.

The Storm of Yesterday.

SUPPOSED DISASTER TO FISHERMEN OFF

rHE COAST.

Yesterday evening the American fishing pink Lucy, Capt. Helliz, of York, Maine, was car- ried into this port, before the wind, with jib and foresail torn to pieces. She broke from her moorings off Pictou Island, and for safety ran directly with the squall. When off White Cape the captain and crew perceived a dory which was blown from the trawls off Murray Harbor. He immediately picked them off and conveyed them to this port. Their names are Samuel and Benj. Crittinden, of Gloucester. They are two of the crew of the fishing schr. Greyhound, also belonging to the State of Maine. Capt. Hellitz says that there were but aman and boy on board the Greyhound when the storm came on, and if she struck adrift she will surely be wrecked. He also states that there inust have been fifty schoon- ers and dories caught in the storm—a small aumber of which are certainly lost.

Tur Earl of EKoudoun, whose mother, a sister of Lady Flora Hastings, ordered in her will that her right hand should be buried un- der a white pillar on her estate, in full view of the trains which take the Queen yearly to Balmoral, the pillar being inscribed with the tierce deyice, “I bide my time,” is to marry Miss Alice Howard, a cousin of the Duke of Norfolk, whose duchess is Lord Loudoun’s sister, and a sister-in-law of the Marquis of Bute.

Tue vessel already reported as having been picked up abandoned, by the sehr. Reform, ar- rived at Halifax on Sunday night, in charge of a crew of eight men from the Reform. She is the brigt Bedehc. of P. E. Island, two years old, registered 199 tons, and is classed 8 years ia English, Lloyds, so that is a most, valuable prize, beimg in perfect order and newly cop- pered, far as can be ascertained, she has aot strained a rope yaru. The Government intend sending four more agricultural instructers among the Blackfeet Indians in about ten days. There are at present two in that district, whe report favorably.

There is a rumor abroad to-day that Mr. C. J. Brydges is to be the new Manager of the Bank of Montreal, and that he will be succeeded in his Hudson Bay post by W. J. Forsyth of this city, whocame very near obtaining the appointment when it was vacated by Mr. D. A. Smith, M. P.

It is now stated that the Princess Louise had not and never had any intention of re- turning to England this fall. H. R. H. is expected to pay a visit to Rideau Hall in a few days to inspect the improvements and alterations now in pregress there, with a view to the accommodation of several Eng- lish guests during the winter,and the inang- uration of what is expected to be a particu- larly festive season.

Intelligence was received in the city this morning of the sad death by drowning of Mr. H. J. Duffy, the Public Works Depart- ment, at Old Orchard Beach, Maine, yes- terday. His relatives reside in the Maritime Provinces. To make the accident addition- ally sad, it is stated that he was engaged to be married to a young lady in this city, the ceremony having been arranged to take place next month.

Montreal, Aug. 18.

The Ottawa ‘‘Citizen” announced yester- day that Messrs, Tilley and Tupper will not return to Canada till the middle of September.

Alex. Begg has just returned to Otiawa from an extensive trip through the free grant districts, and he reports a good harvest and settlers prosperous and con. tented.

The Dominion Government has appointed an engineer to examine and report upon the Trent River works, with a view te ascertaining the feasibility of construct- ing a canal between Lake Huron and Bay of Quinte.

The steamer ‘‘Druid,” with His Excel- lency the Governor General and H. R. H. the Princess Louise on board, arrived at Campbellton, N. B., at noon yesterday. The steamer with the Royal Party will leave immediately for New Richmond, Quebec.

In WARD No. 2—At the Warehouse of Richard Heartz, Esq., fronting on Sydney Strect.

Number Two shall comprise all that part of Charlottetown which liessouth of Richmond Street and north of Dor- chester Street. Number Three shall comprise all that part of Charlottetown which lies south otf Grafton Street and north of Richmond Street. Number Four shali comprise all that part of Charlottetown which lies south of Fitzroy Street and north of Grafton Street. Number Five shall comprise all that part of Charlottetown which lies north of Fitzroy Street, including the Common of the said Town.

QUALIFICAITONS. An Act to amend an Act to incorporate the the town of Charlottetown, passed 18th April, 1877 :

Section 1. All the male inhabitants of the age of twenty-one years and upwards, who who shall have resided in the said city for at least one year then next preceding the day of such Election, and being British subjects, and such of whom shall actually, and within the Ward for which he shall vote, then be, and for three months previously shall have been, actually and in his own right, the bona fide owner of the freehold of one whole Town Lot, Common Lot, Water Lot, or the bonn fide owner of a piece of ground of the yearly value of Thirty dollars, or the bona fide owner of the freehold of a Uwelling House, part of a Dwelling House, Store, Warehouse, Office or Shop, of the yearly value of Thirty Dollars ; or who shall be in the tenancy or occupancy of a Town Lot, Common Lot, Water Lot, or piece of Ground, Dwelling House, part of a Dwelling House, Shop or Warehouse, of the annual rent of Thirty Dollars, payable quar- terly, half-yearly, or yearly; and no other person shall be entitled to vote at said Elec. tions for such Mayor and Councillors ; pro- vided that every partner, whose share of the rent amounts to Thirty Dollars annually, shall be entitled to vote ; and provided further, that every such male person of age, aforesaid, and being a non-resident of such city, shall be
