To-day a tract of land in the suburbs, containing about twenty-two acres, and a town lot near the residence of Mr. Easton, were sold by A. ¥ ill, Auctioneer, at the Law Courts Building, for the sum of $600 cash. Mr. Thomas Hessian was the purchaser. It is noteworthy, that while real estate is said to be depreciating in value, this property brought per acre $25.

Riel’s Trial.

Reena, August 1. Riel’s trial was resumed this morning. Capt. Young, Gen. Middleton, Rev. C.

B. Pitblado, Carr Deant, and Corporal Pigott, gave testimony rebutting the ,in sanity testimony given yesterday by witneeses for the defence.

Fitzpatrick addressed the jury for the prisoner, drawing tears from two of the jurymen and several of the audience. Riel addressed the jury for nearly two hours. He said he did not desire the plea insanity, and hoped with God’s help, to show he was not insane. He paused abruptly in his speech and offered up a brief prayer for help, and then continued his address, Robinson addressed the jury in a powerful speech on behalf of the Crown, and the case was given to the jury.

A Soldier’s Revenge 2nd Suicide

Bomsay, July 31. A soldier to-day was reported for miscon- uct. In revenge he shot and killed two sergeants belonging to the native regiment. He then barricaded himself within quarters and shot his wife dead. After keeping up for atime an ineffective fire against those whom attempted to assail his retreat, he lay down beside his wife’s corpse, and with

his last bullet, ended his own life.

Two Men Killed. New York, Aug. 1.

Nine workmen on the new Aqueduct, at Shaft No. 24, near Highbridge, got into the bucket at noon yesterday to come to the top of the shaft, 175 feet. When a third of the way up the edge of the bucket caught in a projecting rock and was upset. Four men were thrown down the pit, and two were killed.

A German Spy Captured.

A German Revenue Officer has been arrested by the Russian authorities at Jacobstadt, on the Baltic, as a spy. On his person were found letters addressed to his wife containing descriptions and plans of the Russian forts and fortifications.
