Returns, so far, from the election in France, show a net Republican gain of 100 seats. The Republican triumph is most notable in districts hitherto reactiorary.

The Austrian polar expedition has arrived at Dronoheim, Norway. The expedition spent a year on the island of Mayen. Com- mander Weh!mouth telegraphs that all hands are well and that he made perfect observations and s:cured a rich collection of photographs.

A letter from the Crown Prince Frederick William to Prince Bismarck, says he is convinced the Germans are desirous of giv- ing succour to friends im ity, and he and wife have therefore plac ir names at the head of a subscription list in aid of people who suffered by the recent earthe quake in Ischia. :

{t may not be known io the majority of our intelligent fellow-citizens that the Princess Amazula, daughter of the late King Cetewayo, resides in our midst, as it were, with very few marks of reverence for her royal state. Such, however, is the fact, the princess being a denizen of Chris- tien hill. The princess joined an Uncle Tom’s Cabin troupe at Cape Town, and taus she came to reach America. At pre- sent she earns an honest but modest liveli- hood by Jetting lodgings and doing wash- ing and ironing for the surrounding white trash, @n being informed of the tragic death of her royal father, in South Africa, the Princess Amazula exhibited no very poiguant grief, and will assume no other court mourning than that with : which nature has provided her.—Providence Journal.

An extraordinary number of vessels have been wrecked in the Straits of Kertch, Black Sea, the past few years, and in con- sequence of many suspicious circumstances, such as the wreck of vessels in calm weather and the fact that some pilots grew rapidly rich, an investigation was made by the English insurance companies, who had paid indemnities amounting to many million roubles. Lt was learned that a pilot named Francisco was head of a band of English, Italian, Greek, and Russian pirates, who made « living by disasters on the coast, They were in collusion with the pilots and charged huge sums for assisting vessels which pilots suffered to go ashore. In less than two years fifty stranded vessels had recourse to the assistance of the pirate salvors, It is said some Government officials are com- promised.

The latest despatch from Rat Portage states that, on the 10th instant, the long expected meeting called by Mr. Mowatt's sympaihisers to ask for incoporation under Ontario, was held et that place. A large crowd was ; resent and considerable uproar took place. Manitoba sympathisers turned out in force and captured the mecting. So faras the Grit crowd is concerned it was a fizzle there. Mr. Pattillo made a motion that it was desirable that Rat Portage be incorporated under Ontario. No seconder could be got for the motion, and confusion ensued. Mr. Ridout then moved that Rat Fortage be incorporated under Manitoba. A dozen of secondere immediately sprang up. Mr. John refused to put the motion, and there was more confusion. Mr. Pattillo then moved that the meeting adjourn for a week. This the Manitoba men voted down, but Mr. John declared the motion carried and the meeting broke up in disorder.

There must be a very large dangerous class in Boston, judging by an incideat of a few days ago. Snuilivan, the noted pugilist, intimated that on the evening after he fought Slade he would open the most mag- nificent beer-saloon in New England. He gave an invitation to his friends te come and try his liquors and cigars at their own expense. It turned out that from fifteen to twenty five thousand ‘‘admirers” strove for the honor of taking a drink on the first night of the ealoon’s existence. Of course the saloon could hold no such number as that, so that the strects and lanes were blocked by a thirsty, curious, discrderly mob, The full police force of the city fail- ed to prevent rowdyism,and a scene followed which might not be thought possible in a civilized city. Every day gives clearer and stronger proof of the presence of an idle class that have no interest in the common weal, a claes increasingly harder to hold in check, and one which grows enormovsly fast when exhibitions of pugilism and low sports are allowed to take place under shelter of law.

Rev. T. D. Phillips, for many years a resident of Ottawa, and now of Wilmington, Illinois, and for nearly forty years a de- voted lover of cricket, was recently chal- lenged to playva single wicket match by a Mr, G. N. Morrison who is pining for laurels ai the bat. Mr. Phillips thus ans- wers the challenge: ‘There is something incom parably ludicrous in this picture of a new Dor Quixote (living in the very home of American cricket)—imber bis juvenis— bidding defiance to a poor old worn-out missionary on the western prairie, who has entered upon the sixth decade of human existence ; and who only gets an occasional glimpse of a cricket ground, and that by travelling sixty miles; so ludicrous, indeed, that it is hardly possible to view it in a eerious aspect.” With reference to the Jnterna- tional match, which takes place to-day at
