OUR HOSPITALE.
Tue two Llo-pitals with which Charlotte town is provided are creditable alike to their promoters and supporters, and to those who have the mauagement of them in bend. Both are doing excellent work, and esch is deserwing of substantial encouragement,
The Charlottetown Hogpital is the senior of the two institutions. As everyone knows j: was established by the late lamented Bishop Mclotyre at a time wbeo the need of such an wae most pressing, and there is no enumerating the amount of good it has since accom- plished. Before his death Bishop Welatyre saw the necessity there was for extending the usefalness of the Hoepita) by providing more commodious quarters end he took advantage of the first oppor-" taoity that presented itself to carry out his ideas along this line. Work upon the presevt imposing and well-equipped Hospital wae beguo; but before the building was completed the good Bishop was called to hie-reward.$ The floishing of the werk thus laid down was at once taken up by bis successor in the episcopal chair, and never was a trust more faithfully carried out. The work was pushed with all possible expedition, and the outcome is the splendid institution so ably managed by the Sisiers of Charity.

year just closed 180 patients were admitted for treatment, .of which number 126 were discharged cured. There were 73 surgical operations during the year. There are 16 patients in the hoepital at the present time, very few of whom sre paying for the treatment they are receiving. The total amount received inthe way of subserip- tiors from the public towerds the maiu- tenance of the Hospital last year was $440, which amount was collected by the Sisters themselves, The balance of the revenue was derived from paying patients and
the various industries of the Sisters. Besides the number treated within the inetitution about 450 outdoor
patients have had their several needs at- tended to. All purchases for the institution are made by the Sisters them selvvs aad thee alone are responsible for the debts contracted.
There are about thirty beds prepared for the accommodation of patients at any time. In cases of emergency, however: more beda may be putin. This hae been necessary On several occasions, aud not uofrequently the Sisters have giyen up their own beds rather than refuse admis- sion to urgent cases of sickness.
Application is often made for the admission of people suffering from incur- able diseases, and for old and infirm people who wants home. Indeed, at the present time there sre a number of this latter clasa in the institution, although it was never intended that it should be used for such a purpose. The Hospital, it shcu'd be remembered, was established for the (reat. ment of curable diseases, and net for the purpose of affording % home for the poor o> those suffering cnly from the infirmities ivcideutal to old age and who after being admitted become a life long charge upon the institution. People of this claes take up the room that it was inteaded should be reserved for persons to whom the Hospital wou'd be of service. Consumptives are not admitted to the general wards, as the disease is of a con- tagious nature and might be communicat- ed from one patient to another. Persons suffering from this diserse must obtaip private rooms.

that the cash subscriptions amounted wo $886.76. The church collectiuas amount- ed to $349.03. Both these items were con- siderably jess than was received from the game sources the previous year. The sum of $150.76 was received as proceeds of entertainments. From patients $1166,- 05 was received, and the eum of $67 was obtained for nurses fees. The legacies included $200 bequeathed by the late Mrs. Trenamac and $50 by the late William Heard. The income on current accounts for the year amounted to $2622 77, which sum added tothe balance from last year makes a total of $3463.24. The current expenses for the year amounted to $2699.. 25.

The prospectus for the new hospital on the Brecken property bas beea published, and the trustees hope to be able to begin work on the new building next sutmmer. The estimated cost of the new hospital is $14,000, und it is understood that all except $3000 has been subscribed.
The first patient was admitted to the Hospital on Jauuary 15th, 1884. The Hospital had not been = long in = Cperation whea it was found necessary to build an addition which was completed in October of the following year. Io 1886 and 1894 turtber improve- ments were made, and nuw it is proposd to build a new institution for the purpose of still farther extendirg iis usefulness.

Oranges.
The very sweetest orange and richest is the black or rusty coated fruit. Pick out the dingiest oranges in the box, and you will get the best. Another way to choose oranges is by weight. The heav- iest are the best, because they have the thinnest skin and more weight of juice. Thick skinned oranges are apt to be dry. They either weigh less because of hav- ing so much skin or because cf the pov- erty of the juice in these particular specimens. A slight freezing on the tree causes this condition in otherwise fine fruit. The ‘‘kid glove’’ oranges are the two varieties of small fruit grown in Florida from stocks respectively brought from China and from Tangier. They are called mandarin and tanger- ine. They may be eaten without soiling a kid glove, because the skin is loose and the little ‘‘gores,’’ or pockets of juice, come apart very cleanly and with- All the above applies to Florida oranges. quality than the home grown oranges.

Moonlight effects in photographs have long been admired by the uninitiated and fully appreciated by both amateur and professiona] photographers for their beauty, and many plates, too, have been spoiled by snap shotters who have accept- ed moonlight as the real illuminator of these views and accordingly focused di- rectly on this beautiful orb of night. Moonlights with the moon herself in evidence are really sun photographs— that is, pictures taken with a rapid ex- posure, the camera pointed toward the sun generally in the late afternoon or early morning and with clouds between the lens and the direct rays.
