The population of Ontario is 1,923,218 ; about equal to the aggregate of the cities of New Yorkand St. Louis, and for this we possess a representation of 99 members. Quebec has a population of 1,359,027, equal to New York with Hamilton deducted, and for this we have 97. Nova Scotia numbers 440,572 souls, equal to Cincinnati and Mon- treal, and for this we have 67. In New Bruns- wick, there are 321,223 people, equal to Washington, Toronte and Winnipeg, and for this we have 68. Manitoba’s share is 65,954, the aggregate of St. John, N. B., and Ottawa, and for this we have 41. British Columbia possesses a population of 49,459, equal to Ottawa and Victoria, B. C., combined, and for this we have 32. Prince Edward Island has 168,891 inhabitants, equal to Detroit and

there wi!! be more force to exert on such an occasion as that of last evening. The vocal solo parts were, under all the circumstances, very well taken by Mr. F. H. Beer, Mrs. Roome, Miss Earle and Mrs. _ E. H. Norton. The latter had never sung before the public of Charlotte- town, and she was at first somewhat ner- yous; but her singing made a most favor- able impression, and she will be welcomed as a decided acquisition to our musical circle. Very fine effects were produced by the organ, under the skilful hands of Messrs. Logan, Blanchard and Earle, and the cornet solo by Mr. Fletcher, with organ accompaniment, was particularly fine. We congratulate the Trustees on the excellent use made of the organ and the Church last evening. There are many spirits which are elevated and purified to a much greater extent by grand music than by sermons—though the value of good ser- mons is undoubtedly very high.

sion. Yet,gunhappily, there are those

amongst us who possess neither fine feeling

nor are they governed by the controiling

influences of religion; and for this latter class it is quite apparent that legislation is the chief method whereby to curb the das-

tardly ill-usage afforded the miserable ani- mals at their disposal.

The vision of St. John when he pictures the army of Heaven riding upon white

horses may seem to us unreal ; still, to our lower conception, the horses, the noblest

of all the brute creation, and man’s chief assistant in times of war or peace, in the profits of commerce or in the pursuit of pleasure, is surely worthy of some further consideration upon earth.

There are other animals much to be com- miserated, and these the efforts of our humane society will scarcely overtake. There is the positive plague of backyard infestants, stray dogs and cats, owned in many cases by people who, unable to feed themselves, persist in keeping around them a swarm of half-starved canine or feline favorites, which afford sport for thought- less, cruel boys, who under such train- ing will necessarily grow up _ to be vicious men. Then there is the pet(?) kitten, which, in return for a crumb of bread, is compelled to undergo all manner of twisting and pulling and punching, and some times even death itself from the hands of the Christian mother’s darling child. We cannot sym- pathize with that English lady who admin- isters wine to her horses, whilst thousands of poor little starving waifs are crouching for shelter in the alleys and bye-ways of her rhighty city; nor do we advise the ear open to the claims of the lower animals, and shut to the woesome cry of human misery; all we desire is that in their own
