Oh, then you havea treasure; you can always keep him if you havea secret and keep it carefully. Is he jealous? Then, woman, this is not for you; cease torturing that fretted heart which wants you for his own, and teach him confi- dence. Is he ugly in temper and fault- finding? Give him adose of his own medieine, skillfully done. Ishe de- ceitful? Pity him for his weakness ; treat him as one who is born with a de- fect, but put your wits to work—it is a bad case. It is well not to be too tame. Men do not waste their powder and shot on hens and barn-yard foul ; they like the pleasure of pursuing wild game— quail and grouse and deer, a quailis a good model for a wife—neat and trim, with a pretty, swift way about, and just a little capricious. Never let yourself become an old story; be just a little un- certain. Another important fact is, don’t be too good ; it hurts his feelings, aod becoms monotonous. Cultivate a pleasant voice, so that this very mortal man may have his conscience prick him when he isin jeopardy; its pleasant ring will haunt him much more than would a shrillone. It is hard to do all this, besides taking care of the babies and looking after vexatious household cares aud smiling when he comes home, but it seems necessary. “To be born a martyr,” says a husband who for ten years has watched in amazement his wife treading the winepress of her ex- istence, It isa pitiful sight to some men. Bat if the wife does not make a study of these things the harpy will, to steal away the honor from his silver hairs when he is fullof years and the father of sons and daughters. Talk about the Sunday law and _ its enforcement in Baltimore! It does not compare to the observance of that day in this great city. One hardly knows London to-day, after the bustle and whirl of yesterday. The stores are closed, the wagons have disappeared, the cabs seem to run more quietly, and the people seem almost afraid to speak aloud. What a centrast after a conti- nental Sabbath! I was hungry this morning, and thought 1 would go to the Criterion and get lunch. Imagine my surprise when | arrived at the res— taurant and found it closed, the Gaiety and St. James likewise. All down the Strand, up in the West End, and even in ‘the city,” the restaurants were closed tighter than the proverbis! clam. Not a place to eat on Sunday save the dining room of an hotel.
