When whai was designed to be a pleasure becomes a burden, it is time to stop and examine it carefully, and see if it is the thing itself which has grown to be such a weight,or whether it is simply an «wkard manner of carrying it. Cer- tainiy there must be something wrong in any celebration of Christmas which results in serious fatigue of mind and body. During the tirst three months of the year, nothing is more commoaly given as a reason for ill-health than an overstrain during the holidays. “She got so worn oui at Christmas,” or *‘she worked too hard in finishing her Christmas presents,” or “the week be- fore Christmas she was tired out with shopping,” are excuses which appear as surely as January and February come. The question must occur some- times to every one, whether all this worry and wear of heart and hand and brain are really worth while. Is there not some better way of celebrating this day ot days than for women to wear themselves out in making or buying pretty trifles for people who already have more than they can find room for. Settiag aside all effort of eyes and fingers, the meatal strain is intense. It is aremarkable fact that, although Christmas has been kept on the 23th day of December for more than 1,000 years, its arrival seems as unexpected as ifit had been appointed by the Presi- dent. Noone is ready for it, although last yeur every one resolved to be so and about the middle of December there begins a _ rush and hurry which is really more weary thana May moving. Above all things, if you give presents, be more anxious to give something which “supplies a want” than to send some pretty trifle which can only prove in the end an additional eare, There are numberless things which can be procured, without a wear and tear of mind and body which make the recipient feel as David did on the water from the well of Bethichem, that what cost so much was too valuable to be accepted.— Susan Annn Brown, in Century.

Right merry and joyful should be the festivities of the Christmas Board, but not the insane excitement from drink. No, banish from the board the wine that excites and destroys both body and soul. Masters of the feast, you as: sume @ dreadful responsibility at this festival. Call your friends together, let everything be festive and cheerful, but do take care that it never shall be said that the first downward step to drink and destruction was taken in your houses. Where wine is cheap and plentital there isa great temptation to drink it. Young meu koaow that temp- tation, and have struggled for hours against it, but as the night grew later as the early hours of morning crept on, a8 the excitment of the feast grew stronger, the decanter was so near, so tempting, the glass was taken, and so much followed from that careless glass Mothers! you have sons,\do your part by banishing from your own houses the death-dealing drink. Fathers! the) young men, yea, and the women really look to you to keep temptation out of theirway. Let them not look in vain. Break through the trammels of custom and society and throw your influence on the side of right and temperance. ‘This drinking you all know is a terrible curse in the land. Cast your. eyes towards the manger shrine at Bethlehem and see one theredenying himself for the good of others, See there the Saviour who came to save mankiod to elevate the race. Youare called to follow in His footsteps and you ean do something this Christmas in the right direction, by keeping temptatioa out of the way ot others, and by being yourselves true followers of the Babe of Bethlehem.
