AT one | k Wednesday morning a fire broke out in the confectionery establish ment of Mr. William Kennedy, situated on the Seuth Sid Queen Square, and nearly opposite the Post Office. The fire

soon assumed alarming proportions, and a

family named Whlliams were hurriedly rescued by ladder from one of the windows, tovether with an old la ly living with them, whom th Chief Eagineer galiantis brought down the ladder, after wrapping her in his yreat-cnat. alarm was given, the whole upper flats of the building were in flames, together with | the whole of the premises, above and below, | oceupied by Mr. Kennedy. The fire de-

partment got promptly to work, and soon | |

smothered the flames, and their efforts bid fair to contine the fire to the Haszard block, and even

save 8 in a more or Jess gutted cvondition, bat soon the dire cry arose that the water was giving out, and the lessened streams of water soon showed to the affrighted citi- zens that it was an unfortunate fact that the suppl of water in the tanks was rapidly failing. fhe streams of water s.on becom- ing inadequate, the fire again gained con- trol, the block was doomed, and the flames communicated tothe buildings east and west. The Patriot office building was soon in flames; and after the brick walls of Mr. John Newson’s furniture establish- ment had resisted the fire for atime, it finally succumbed, and beth buildings went | down. St. Patrick's Hall, a substantial brick building, successfully resisted the terrible tire made by Newson’s building, although the hall caught on the roof, and some of the windows on the north side were injured or destroyed.

In the meantime the fire communicated to W. & A. Brown’s store on the west, which, with that occupied by Henry Beer, and owned by Heartz & Scn, was soon a mass of flames. All this time the fire department could do but little on account of the failure of the water supply. The men worked like trojans and did wonders under the circumstances. The fire next attacked the building owned joint- ly by Heartz & Son and Mra Stamper, but by almost superhuman efforts the firemen succeeded in saving Mrs. Stamper’s house on the corner.

_ The fire thus commencing in Kenuedy’s, destroyed the office of Messrs. Warburton & Oonroy, lawyers (their office being separated from Kennedy's by a temporary artition) the office of Messra. McLeod & forson, Kennedy's confectionery, Des- Brisay & Angus’ office, 8S. T. Nelmes’ bookstore, E. W. Taylor, jeweller, all in the one block; the bookstore and bindery of G. H. Haszard, the dry goods store of W. & A. Brown & Co., the hardware store of Henry Beer, and the flour and feed store of Mr. Angus. The next premises des- troyed were unoccupied. On the east the Patriot building, a3 we have already stated, was destroyed, in which was the Patriot | newspaper, overhead, and on the lower or ground floor were the hair dressing saloon of Mr. Power, and the billiard rooms of | Jos, Wakefield Messrs. McLean & | Martin occupied an office on the second floor of Mr. Newson’s building, and Messrs. Fraser & Reddin, druggists, occupied a portion of the lower flat.

Mr. Newson oceupied the rest of the premises with his extensive furniture business. His whole establishment, including all his workshops, facing on Sydney Street, went down before the destroying element. About the time that Mr. Newson’s factory was burning, it was observed that the roof of the Pest Office building was on fire, and a number cf persons attempted to extinguish the flames. At first the fire attracted | little notice, but the flames soon gained | such headway, in consequence of the short water supply, that the fine building was | almost completely destroyed. Only the walls and the principal vaults remain. Assis tant Cc llector Bremner placed a)l the Custom House papers in the proper vault, | where they still remain.

Altogether, this has been the most de- structive fire which has visited Charlotie- town since the great fire in 1°66.

When it became evident that the pre- mizes would be destroyed, Messrs. Newson and Fraser & Reddin removed their stocks, or the greater portion ofthem. The Patriot saved little but paper, and much of that was afterwards removed from the equare in a damaged state, as the flakes of fire attack- ed it, andthe furniture of Mr. Newson, | which oceupied a good portion of the square about and near the Colonial Build- ing. Mr. Kennedy lost everything, with trifling exception ; Mr. Nelmes’ and Mr. Haszard’s stock suffered severely; Mr. | Taylor, we believe, saved the greater por- | tion of his stock; Messrs. W. & A. Brown | saved considerable, and Mr. C. B. Warren, | who occupied .‘* Stamper’s Corner,” re- | moved his stock of boots and shoes, but as | we have shown, the building was not de stroyed.

The great loss which individuals and the town have met with, isthe direct result of parsimony ona point when such a spirit is acrime, More water is wanted in Char- | lottown; and more water must be had.

The death of Mr. Joseph Weeks, one of Charlottetown’s oldest and most res- pected citizens, occurred Wednesday. He was at work carrying water to extinguish the fire which threatened the house of his neighbor, and while thus employed he

fell prostrate and expired. He was the father of the Messrs. Weeks, of the firm of W. A. Weeks & Co. He was

The Carnival at Georgetown.

Tuesday night was Georgetown’s first ven- ture in Carnivals, and if we judge from the success which attended it, we are safe in predicting it will not be the last. Few Carnivals in small places have been better arranged. The variety and excellence of the costumes, were the subject of much favorable comment by those who were fortunate enough to be in attendance. J'o particularize and do justice to those who deserve commendation for their splendid impersonations would take more space than we can to-day afford. Suffice, therefore, to say that the first carnival held in George- town was a grand success, and that it re- flected the greatest credit on all who took
