GRAVE OF PATRICK HENRY.

Every now amd then we see jn some newspaper the query, ‘‘Where is Pat- rick Henry ried?’’ and tourists in Richmond ceastantly ask to be shown his grave, with the mistaken idea that it isin that city, where much of his public career was passed. Few people comparatively know that the man who acquired the title of ‘‘The Tongue of the Revolution”’ lies in a quiet grave on the estate in Charlotte county where he formerly lived. Over it is a marble slab inscribed with one line, ‘‘ His fame his best epitaph.”

The estate lies on Staunton river, 88 miles from the town of Lynchburg, near tee border lime which separates Char- lette and Campbell counties. I¢ derived *ts name of Red Hill from the peculiar color of the soil in that vicinity. When Patrick Henry bought the place, it com- prised about 8,500 acres. The land ia rich—there was a saying in ‘the neigh- borhood that poor land and Henry could never be mentioned together—corn grows there as high as a man on horse- back; there is a general air of smiling fields ané abundant prosperity. Its :sit- uation im early times was very remo#te. Neighbors were few, one of tha nearest being the celebrated John Randolph of Roancke, who lived in his chosen-soli- tude 14 miles away.

TRAINING A WARHORSE

A warhorse is broken to be steady ander fire by tying ropes to his legs.

While the animal is down on the ground |

the officer takes a pistol and fires it elose to his ear. Then in rapid order he fires the weapon over his back, under his neck, between his legs, anywhere that an opening presents itself during the horse’s futile struggles. Not until he sinks back exhausted, all a-tremble and showing the whites of hiseyes, does the pistol practice cease.

After two or three lessonsof this kind it is considered safe to moumt him with a bridle furnished with a curb bit. Up ‘to this time the horse has never felt a ‘curb. The light snaffle is still retained, ‘and the curb bridle is only given a gen- tle pressure at first, just enough to let him know that it is there. Gradually the strength of the pull is increased, and with this safeguard the horse is taught to stand fire from his rider’s pis- tol or carbine.

In carbine practiee the horse must be thoroughly broken, as both hands are required in using this weapon, whereas with the pistol the rider may retain the bridle with one hand.

Then comes saber practice, and that is another trial to the horse. Again is he thrown to the ground, and he proba- bly can’t understand why he should have to suffer this indignity all over again, for he ‘has learned that lesson very well. But when the bright blade of the saber, with quick thrusts flash- ing before his eyes and cutting the air in close proximity to his ears, appears to him he is again terror stricken.

But the ‘lesson he has learned from the smell of gunpowder stands him in good steatl,-and he soon gets over his fear. And even with a man on his back and another mounted upon a seasoned

in the air o- slashing left and right he knows that it is all a part of his educa- tion and something to be expected. So he stands his ground or cavorts about the other horse while the two troopers

indulge in their saber practice.—New |

READING SEALED LETTERS.

Tt is not generally known that sealed letters may in many cases be read with- out opening the envelopes or doing them the least injury. It was discovered by a German physiologist by the use of an embryoscope, or egg glass, that the shells of eggs were of very unequal thickness.

It occurred to him to make experi- ments in order to ascertain how many leaves of ordinary letter or official pa- per must 9) laid above and belowa written leat in order to make it illegible to a highly sensitive eye in the direct sublight. He found that after he had rested his eye in a dark room for 10 or 15 minutes he cold read a piece of writ- ing over the mirror of the embryoscope that had been covered with eight layers of paper.

He called in other observers to con- firm this. The letters, however, that could thus be deciphered were written in dark ink on one side of the paper only. If four written sides were folded together, and especially if there had been crossing, it was hard to make ont the drift of the writing, and there are some kinds of writing which, when folded twice or thrice, admit too little light for the purpose of decipherment.

In this way possibly many of the per- formances of ‘‘clairvoyants’’ may be ex- plained. By means of the egg glass it is, as a rule, easier to make out the con- tents of letter or telegram without the slightest tampering with the envelope than itis to detect the movements of the embryo in the egg.

Suppose the writer of a billet, the contents of which are known only to himself, lets it out of his hand and loses sight of it for five minutes. It may be readily carried either into the direct sunlight or into electric or magnesium light and be read by the aid of the egg giass. The placing of a piece of car- tridge paper in the envelope or the col- oring of it black is a means of defense at hand.
