Two inoflensive countrymen were set upon last evening on Pownal street by a gang of young ruffans and brutally beaten. ‘The young scoundrels escaped without arrest, but itjis to be hoped they will yet be punished for thair villiany.
Tue barkentine ‘‘ Erema,” John McMahon, master, with a cargo of 26,189 bush. oats, of 3+ lbs. each, and 400 pes. deals, containing 11,000 feet, superficial measure, shipped by Peake Bros. & Co., cleared for Plymouth, G. b., for orders, on the 29th inst.
Jounx Pavrrerson appeared at the Stipen- diary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon, on complaint of Mr. Finlay. Patterson, it ap pears was intoxicated in the Market House, and used threatening language towards Mr. Finlay. He was fined four dollars or twenty days.
Tue West River buoys, seven in number, were removed some days ago. This isa strange procedure in the face of the fact that four schooners are loading up the river, and others are expected up every hour. ‘The steamer

Tue steamer ‘‘Carroll” sailed from this port for boston at four o'clock this afternoon with a full cargeof produce. This is the last trip which she will make this fall. She has had a most suecessful season, having full freights as well as large passenger lists.on all trips. We wish Captain Wright and his jolly crew a safe return next sprihy. Tue Rev. William Taylor, of world-wide missionary fame, we are glad to say, may be expected here by steamer this evening from Pictou, and will occupy the pulpit in Prince Street, Methodist Church, morning and even- ing to-morrow, and in the afternoon in the second Methodist Church, at 3.15.
This gentleman is well known, everywhere as the ‘‘California Street preacher.” He is an American by birth, but cosmopolitan by his evangelistic labors. Heis at present making a hasty tenz of these Maritime Provinces, in the interest of his great missionary work.
He will lecture on missions, on Monday and Tuesday evenings. The place to be anncunced to-morrow.
