October 1, 1990 Dear members,
As Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students/Canadian Federation of Students-Services, | would like to invite you to read the first issue of the “STUDENT voice” from cover to cover. “STUDENT voice” is our way of letting you, our membership, know what te national student organization is doing to improve the quality of student life on Canadian campuses from coast to coast. The Federation represents over 400, 000 post-secondary students from St John’s, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia. You, as an individual member, are represented by your student association at our General Meetings twice ayear.
The Canadian Federation of Students is YOUR national student organization. Our ultimate goal is to achieve a post-secondary education system which is fully accessible and of high quality. The Federal government has an enormous role in post-secondary education by virtue of the federal-provincial funding arrangements. The federal transfer payments to the provinces for post-secondary education and health, Canada Student Loans, and research money for the granting councils (NSERC, SSHRC and MRC) are funded by the federal government. It is for this reason that post-secondary education students need to have representation on Parliament Hill. The Canadian Federation of Students represents your concerns to the federal government and lobbies the government for change in policies which affect us.
As members of the Federation, we must work together to make the difference. And we can make a difference. Because students recognized th? need to take action, your tuition and residence fees are now exempt from the 7% Goods and Services tax.
As well, as a member of the Federation, you own and operate one of the largest student services co-operatives in the world. Travel Cuts, the travel company of the Federation, the student work aboard program, and the StudentSaver Program - a national discount program with over 6000 listings across Canada are but a few of the services offered to members of the Federation: The Federation was founded on the principle to enhance the quality of student life - the Canadian Federation of Students - Services works towards that goal.
The campaigns Strategy for change, that was adopted at our May 1990 annual general meeting is upbeat and exciting. In order for our campaigns to be successful we need maximum participation. | strongly encourage you to get involved and help make a difference!
