The art exhibit, located at the UPEI Women's Centre (former site of the Planetarium), will feature the works of Island women artists. The show will open with a reception on March |] at 7:30 p.m. Opening remarks will be made by Carla Riceand Lesley- Anne Bourne will read from her new book of

poetry, Skinny Girls.

The university is currently conducting an internal strategic review through the Academic Review and Planning Committee. Part of the

internal review includes a survey of students

to determine student awareness and use of services at U.P.E.I. This will take the form of

a telephone survey, to be conducted during the week of March 9 to March 16. A market research firm willbe phoning students at home and questioning them about their use of the services available at the university. Student cooperation in this survey would be greatly appreciated.

What’s On at the Panther Lounge

As we near the end of the year there is still time left for some unforgettable nights down at the Barn.

Mark March 17 on your calendar. The Panther Lounge will be hosting its all-day, all-night St. Patrick’s Day Bash with Windjammer, a Saint John Irish band. Windjammer will be playing during the afternoon and then a full three sets in the evening. The Lounge will open at 1:00pm, but plan to get here early because we were packed solid last year by eight o'clock. We're even toying with the idea of having the whole building open at night. St. Pat's is definitely a green draught day.

Sunday, March 20 marks the tenth anniversary of Wrestlemania. The WWF is celebrating by putting on Wrestlemania X. The promo material we've received is fantastic, and this promises to be the best wrestling event ever. We'll have the ten-foot screen set up, and this event will be open to allages. We had over four hundred people for the Royal Rumble. We'll be bursting at the seams this time. So, remember Sunday, March 20 at 3:00pm (the event starts at 5:00); admission is only six dollars and our limit is 475.

The tension is mounting as we get

nearer March 31st, and the “Fun in the Sun” contest winner will be chosen. The lucky winner will win an all expense paid trip to ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA!, leaving April 30 and returning May 8. The qualifiers so far are:

Graduates!

Any graduates out there planning on doing some graduate work in the Fall of 1994? Well, maybe you should consider coming in to Student Services and looking through the awards binder for graduating students.

There are MANY different awards available, but do not leave it until the last minute because deadlines vary. Also, any undergraduates in second or third year may want to start looking early for awards concerning your continuing education.

The Body Shop’s violence against women campaign

PARTNERS, THE BODY SHOP CANADA The very foundation of the Body Shop's spirit and spunk is based upon the efforts of its franchises and staff--ninety per cent of whom are women. To know that half of the women in Canada have been physically or sexually assaulted not only alarms us, but ignites an anger that has compelled us to action. We are appalled that half of all Canadian women have been subjected to violence. Half of you--our customers--have experienced assault.

Men who abuse feel they have the right to dominate and control women through intimidation, threats and violence. This is not only wrong, it’s against the law. The only way to stop violence against women is to change society, enlisting the help of both men and women.

We believe we have an obligation to contribute towards a solution. Our shops have always been used as a forum for raising awareness of important issues, raising funds for worthy causes, and educating and informing our customers and staff.

The goals of our violence against women campaign is to empower our staff with information and training which they can pass on to you. Campaign bookmarks, which customers received through Body Shopsacross the country, when returned, will generate fifty cents each towards the YWCA of/du Canada and The Canadian Women's Foundation. We'll also donate $2 from the sale of each “In the Name of Love--Stop Violence Against Women” T-Shirt.

With your help, we'll be able to make a significant contribution to education and prevention programs and activities across

Canada.

On Tuesday March 8 the Body Shop will be selling daisies and baked goods with all proceeds going to Anderson House—a shelter for abused women.

Investing in the Power of Women

YMCA and Body Shop join forces with Canadian Women’s Foundation BY JULIE WHITE,

PRESIDENT, CANADIAN WOMEN’S FOUNDATION The Canadian Women's Foundation is the first and only national, public foundation for women and girls in Canada. CWF was founded several years ago by a group of women who were concerned about the poverty and violence in women’s lives, and the shortage of money to address women’s needs.

The vision of CWF is to fund positive change for women. To that end, CWF raises money and makes grants to results-oriented projects that help women to improve their economic lives and security.

We are excited about our partnership with The Body Shop and the YMCA offdu Canada. We recognize that violence, in all its forms, isa major barrier to the achievement of self-reliance and economic security for women and girls. More than half the women in Canada have directly experienced some form of violence. The fear of violence limits the lives of all women and girls. But we also know it has not limited our potential, our dreams, or our own ability to work for change.

In addition to the awareness and education value of The Body Shop campaign, some of the money raised as a result of your participation will go to the Violence Prevention Fund at the Foundation. We will use these funds to make grants to sexual assault centres, shelters and other women's groups working to change attitudes and prevent violence against women.

We look for support from those like The Body Shop and its customers who recognize that building a strong future means funding the development of equality in our society. This partnership gives us another important way to work to end the violence in women’s lives. It is another way that we can invest in the power of women and the dreams of girls.
