The prize makers at St. John have thought proper to jumble all the animals which should be in these five classes into one—having put horses for agricultural purposes, heavy draft horses (exclusive of Clydesdales, Suffolks and Percherons), Clydesdales, Suffolks and Percherons, to compete in the same class — designated ‘Draft or Agricultural.” Is it to be in- ferred from this that a horse which is capable of drawing bis part of a plow or harrow, or a half ton of hay ona truck, may be called a draft or agricultural horse ? If a horse is exhibited in that class, per- fectly sound and of good shape, weighing from 1,600 to 2,000 lbs., he must be con- sidered a very fine draft horse, but alto-

were awarded $775. And in summing up the whole which is to be given in St. John as prizes, to all kinds of cattle, the amount will be found to be $1,669, and in Halifax was paid the handsome sum of $4,208, a difliciency against St. John in cattle prizes of $2,539, and in Horse prizes of $1,016 or of both added together the unreasonable difference of $3,555 appears against the St John prize list in Horses and Cattle alone. Further comparisons might be made to show the great lack of judgment used by the persons to whom the arrangement of the prize list was entrusted. They could not have had men of any experience in matters pertaining to exhibiiions of a general or extended kind. Jt would almost appear that the prize list was made out on purpose to suit the Previnee of New Brunswick, as prizes do not seem to be offered for any: thing they have not themselves. This Provinee could have made a fine show in every class of horses they have left unfilled, viz: The English Cart Horse, the Clydes- dale, the Sutfolk and Percheron, to say no‘hing of what would likely come from other places. This Island could have aiso made a gocd cisplay of Shropshiie and Oxford Downs sheep, but the black faces are all run in together excepting the South down, much inferior to either of the others. But asit is, Mr. Editor, the prizes are so trifling, which are offered to all kinds of live stock, that it is more than probable that the Advisory Board, which was appointed a few days ayo by the Government to make arrangements to provide for a suitable and well selected exhibit of live stock to be sent te St. John in October next, will, at the meeting to be held in a few days time, pass a resolution advising the Government and the stock- raisers of this Province to send nothing in live stock. Our friends in New Brunswick then can pocket the share of the prize money that might come to the Island, but while they are doing that, bitter experience will have taught them that there is no ex hibit that can go te an exhibition that will give it the same snap and make it so inter- esting to the majority of the visitors, as a good show of live stock, particalarly horses and cattle. The St. John people will find they have lost an excellent opportunity for making the best show of animals that has ever been east of Ontaric—the principal cause of which is having issued a catalogue with a list of prizes, none too large for a ‘‘one horse show,’ instead of for ‘‘the Dominion ard Centennial Exhibition.”

Cornwall Susp:cious Again.
Sir,—Last winter a theft was eommitted in Cornwall which the tracks imprinted on the snow led the people of that settlement to believe the thieves to have originated from North River. We donot blame the people of that settlement for being sus- picious regarding the theft then committed. But there has been a recent theft in the said settlement which has not jn the small- est degree, any right to be published as ougmitig’ by any of the North River gang. Cornwall would do well to take into consideration before condemning _ their neighbors, that they they themselves have harbored thieves more competent to rob Churches and Church yards than the thieves of North River.

( ity of Charlottetown, as follows :— 1. The rate of Assessment for the year
commencing the Ist January, A. D. 1°83, and ending 3ist December, A. D, 1883, is hereby specified and fixed at the rate of one cent and one-twentieth of a cent on every dollar of the v#lue of Real Estate within the City of Charlottetown, according to the valu-
ation of such Real Estate as assessed by the Assessors of the said City, in their valuation roll of such Real Estate, made and duly re- turned by them on the sixth day of April A.D. 1883.
2. The rate of Assessment for the year commencing the Ist day of January, A, D, 1882, and ending 3lst day of December, A. E it enacted by the City Conncil of the ; City of Charlottetown, as follows :— 1. A discount at the rate of two and one- half per cent, shall be allowed to all tax- payers who shall, on or before the thirtieth day of June, A.
