Examine the Grit record. So much is being said of buodling now-a-days, and the Grit puri y ars shouting boedle with such enthusiasm of lung power, that it mght be supposed their own record was as the white- ness of the driven snow, Fancy M. C. Cameron, for instance, pinning on his capa- cious bosom the white flower of a blameless politics] life! Faney James David Edgar, with his lungs of brass and his cheek of the same material, in the shadow of his famous ** Gas” trip to the Champ de Mars, Montreal, passing as a censor of public morals! Fancy the Grit record of 1872 being stowed away among the lumber of the political attic while the men who built up that record now make broad their phy- lacteries and call on high heaven to bear witness to the sins of the other fellows! The sins of 1872 cannot condone the sins of 1891 ; but the worst that has been proven this seasion, save the atrocious robberies of Mercier and his gang, is but a blot com- pared to the black page of history of the Grit regime.

In 1874 he contested South : Huron, his seat was protested, he admitted in court having spent from $10,000 to $14,- 000 in bribery by agents and the Superior Court judges who revised the case, ssid : “There are strong grounds for thinking that the respondent, Malevlim Colin’ Cam- eron, was guilty of persanal bribery. Had jthe judge who tried the case found the re- spondent guilty of personal bribery we would have sustained the judgment.”” And it is this rank corruptionist, this debaucher of the electorate, this self-confessed worker of iniquity, that now cas‘s his eyes ceiling- ward and thanks the Creator that he is not )even as Edward Cochrane, one of the pur- jest, most high-minded and most respected members ot the Commons,

Rank corruptionist as he was, he was the party standard bearer in every elec- tion since, and was and is one of the chief pillars in the Grit tabernacle.

Major Walker, the Reform candidate in London in 1874, fell a victim to the law. Mr. Norris, unseated for bribery, entered his corrupt expenditures as missionary »X- penses. Malcolm Cameron spent $6,000 in carrying Russell. Hon. W. Ross, Mr. McKenzie’s first Minister of Militia, went down to Victoria, N. S., for re-election in December, 1873, and as he put it, ‘*I plac-

McNab, Woed, Cam- eron (Huron) Walker, Mackenzie (Mon- trea]), Stewart, Kerr, MacDougall, (Ren- frew), Cook, O’Donohue, McLellan, Dy- mond.

HOW GRIT MEMBERS BOODLED.

It was only in the constituencies that cor- ruption under the Grit regime was rampant. The ‘‘awfulness” of Hon. ‘Thomas McGreevy’s guilt is a never-ending theme with the cork- screw chief organ and its following in the House and in the country. What is the record of its own friends? In 1875-76 Mr. Anglin, Speaker of the House of Commons, received from Mr. Mackenzie printing con- tracts which, having no job printing office of his own, he farmed out to Chubb & Co., of St. John, N. B., pocketing a comfortable margin as “‘middieman.” Mr. Spencer's bills were: 1875, St. John Freeman, priuting, etc., $8,126; 1876, St. John Freeman, printing, eto., $10,264; total, $18,390.

Mr, Jones, of haul-down-that flag fame, member for Halifax, and Mr. Vail. member for Digby, owners of the Halifax Citizen, got for printing in 1875 $10,199, and in 1876 $14,277 a total of $24,146.

A contract for carrying the celebrated steel rails was given to Mr. Norris, member for Lincoln.

Some $10,000 worth of supplies for railway purposes were purchased by the Government from Mr. Mcleod, M. P,, for Kent, N. B.

Nearly $40,000 was paid in 1875-6-7 by the Government to Mr. Bannatyne, M. P. for Provencher.

Large sums were paid to Mr. Cunningham, M. P. for New Westminster, and Mr. Work- man, M. P. for Montreal, also,

These facts do not excuse Hon, Thomas McGreevy; certainly not. Nor do they ex- euse the grant of all the timber limits be- tween Edmondton and the Rocky mountains to H. H. Cook by Mr. Mackenzie after his government had been defeated in 1873. But this may be pointed out, that while the present Government's expressed intention and practice is to punish the guilty, the Grit bocdlers, so far from being punished, were every man of them given advanced seats in the synagogue.
