THE BELFAST RAILWAY.

Sir,—When interviewed by a Patriot representative Sir Louis H. Davies said that he would not ask his ¢ Olleagues for a grantior the Beltast and Murray Harbor Railway unless ;the Loca! Government would agree to give ayearly subsidy ot $12,000 for the Hilleboroug ch Bridge. The electors of Belfast and Murray Harbor are very anxious to know what our local re-~ presentatives intend to do in the matter.

Here is a good chance for Messrs. Mc- Dovald, Forb-s aud McKinnou to show their fidelity to their constituents,

sinuate that it was only a * political dodge.” However, the subsequent con-

duct of these men has been altogether in- explicable.

As soon as the Liberal party attained to power at Ottawa, these “ local champions” seem to have lostall their zeal. No more resolutions were passed.

No more petitions were forwarded. Why is this? Havethey no taith in the party, or have they lost all their interest in the matter ?

Isit any wonder that many of the electors of both political parties ~hould begin to look upon them with suspicion ?

Sir Lonis has now giventhem a grand opportunity to vindicate tl emselves before

the people and show their ivtiaeuce with their party. Hov. H. C. McDonalda’, oe of the

leaders ef our Provincial Goveromeat, c n surely induce his collesgnesto grant the required subsidy.

Belfast and Murray Harbor have borne their share of the cost of constructing the P. 2.1 R. We therefo-e feel confident

that have enjoyed Railway facilittes for many years weuld be prompted by their sense of justice and fairplay to vote for this s ubsidy should the matter be properly presen ted to them.

The same sense of justic? would, no doubt, induce the mem bers of the ‘House of Commons to grant the amount required for the construction of this railway should Sir Louis Davies fulfil his solemn promises to use his inflnence in the matter.

The electors have ;a‘iently waited eight long years fora fulfilment of those pro- mises.

Mr. Martin has done much to strengthen his hand by proving conclusively, id the House of Commons tbat the Dominion Government never paid a cent forthe con~ struction of the P. E.1.R. although it was chargel against the province in the Public Accounts year afier year.

The correction of that error was certsia- ly a most effective stroke in our favor.

It ie truly surprising that such a glaring oe ear to our province should$ so long betolerated by our brilliant representatives. Let Sir L. H. Davies and Hon. H. 4 McDonald ‘‘prove but true” at this junctur and Jong delayed justice will at last be meted out to the people of Belfast and Murray Harbor.
