Watching the evo- lutions of the Grand Amazonian March, we saw the people of every known nation and tongue, representatives from the snowy plains of the chill north to the scorching heat of the torrid zone ; from the northern homes of the silvery, crackling mountain streams, to the dense weed-matted source of the congo ; from the land of lofty min- arets and black-eyed Houris to the wild western prairie lands of the unfettered red man, gathered together from the north and the. south, from the east and the west, to take partin our Annual Carnival; skating in and out, twisting about, right and left, down the centre and up the sides ; per- forming evolutions too dazzling for eye to follow. At last, this indiscribable whirl of nations; this bewildering babel of dresses dissolves and singly, or in twos or threes, forming the strangest alliances, they glided on the smooth ice, keeping time with the soul-inspiring strain. of the Band. We would follow the usual way of calling it ‘‘The Charlottetown Brass Band,

We trust that the ‘Corsican Brothers” do not cherish a vendetta against the Rink, though they were absent. ‘The manly physique of the ‘Colonel of Volun- teera”’ of a former Carnival was absent; but was represented by his handsome subaltern. ‘*Couer de Lion” appeared as brave and as strong as when he led his army of Crusaders t» fight the Saracens for the Holy ‘* Sep- ulchre.” But where was his Berengaria ~ his fair Navarrese Bride? Mayhap on her way to Scicilly to juin her warlike lord— he flicting lavishly in the meantime. The “South West Wind” fanned the heavy air a‘ times with’ his gentle breeze, and old ‘Rip Van Winkle” looked as if he would never go to sleop agiin. ‘Kings’ and ‘‘Peasants,” conversing on terms of in- timacy, marked the levelling char- acter of the . age, ‘Bluff Hal” looking as merry and portly as when he won the affections of the gentle Catherine. We are glad, for the quiet of the Rink, that he left his wives at home, for he was evi. dently looking cut for a sweetheart. ‘The Flour of the Family” was of the choicest brand, double superior—and very well dunn, In our opinion the ‘‘ Patent Expander” was as good a device as we ever saw, and

required a strong, active young fellow to}

support the character. The ‘‘ Matadore” looked as clear-limbed a youth as ever threw red cloth over “‘La Toras.” We leave the matter of the handsomest dress in the hands of the ladies. Altogether, 1t was the best spectacle ever seen in our city. The ice was a little damp ; perhaps the ‘‘ Directors” could not help that, though some one said in our hearing that the ice would be better if it had some of the cold north wind that was singing outside. Seriously, however, King Solus shonld have kept the north: wind-at all events, till the south-west re- turned, and that was after midnight. Every- thing passed off ‘‘as merry as a marriage bell.” The discomforts endured were far

in conformity with the dresses in which they had clothed themselves. But what matter, if all tended to the general amusé- ment, as few recognized the difference be- tween good acting and burlesque. Now,
