at once visited the Provincial Building. from the summit of which we had a fine view of the harbour and city. The houses are principally of wood, but there are some fine public buildings, including the Post Office, Custom House, Court House and the Government building. These are all placed together in a large square

though the appearance of these fine erecs tions is much spoilt by the proximity of the market building—an old and not very handsome wooden, frame, covered on top and sides with shingles. The Assembly chamber is not much larger than our Court room. The harbour is a magnificent one

several miles across each way and almost completely landlocked. There are three rivers or arms of the sea running up from it in different directions for a distance of twenty miles, which make Charlottetown easy of access to a large extent of country. Some of our party who rambled further than we did, told us that there were a number of fine private residences on the outskirts. The sidewalks are generally of earth, and we do not suppose that the ex. tent of wooden sidewalks exceeds thit of Perth, while they are not to be compared to ours in the state of repair. Crossings are to be noticed chiefiy by their absence. A fine park is being laid out at one side of the city on the shore of the harbour, which will add greatly to the attractions of the place. The great want of Charlottetown, however, isa good first class hotel, which would undoubtedly pay well. The accom. modation and appearance of the present hotels is much behind that afforded in Perth. There was formerly a regiment stationed here, and the place. does not seem t> have as yet awakened’ from the lethargy usual to garrison towns when the troops have been withdrawn.

The people are hospitable and the situ- ation fine, and we have doubt that if a good hotel were provided and the streets brushed up Charlottetown would be:ome one of the most popular watering places in

The great increase is due, of course. tothe heavy importations necessitated by tne destruction of stocks in the great fire, In Halifax the customs receipts showed an increase of $7,776.94 this year, the returns for the month just ended being $83,552.33,

It is stated that indictments will be laid before the Grand Jury at the approaching term of Queen’s Bench against leading Orangemen for taking part in the proces- sion at the Hackett funeral, the association being said by counsel, who have been con- sulted, to be illegal. The volunteers are beginning to clamor for the pay due them on that occasion, the City Council having declined to pay them.
