Well, we wouldn't have thought it possible earlier in the year, but the foot- ball Panthers have develop— ed into the scourge of the league. Right now, if we were to meet the'St. Mary's Huskies, we'd wipe them off the field. We've scored easy wins over Dalhousie, Mount Allison, and U.N.B. and Acadia will fall-o this Saturday. The Axemen are ranked number . ten in Canada so this will be a prestigious battle for Ed Hilton and the Crew. St. Mary's is ranked fifth but considering their narrow victories over St. F.X., Acadia and an out-of— shape U.P.E.I., they should be counting their stars. The Panthers are not the same team that lost to the Huskies by ten points in their season opener. As of right now, the Panthers could beat St. Mary's by ten points and more! This team has worked like hell and is richly deserving of our praise. They've supplied us with many hours of en- joyment and the fans have shown their appreciation on numerous occasions. There will be many students travelling to Wolfville this weekend to witness the game and bid a success—

The hockey team, on the other hand, finds itself in a position similar to the football team at the Start of its season. In Splitting two games with a much-bigger-St. F.X. team, the Panthers showed lots of guts and an adequate level of ability. Their loss to U.N.B. puts their record at l - 2 in exhibition encounters - the.same as the exhibition record of the football team. The league this

year seems very well bal- anced with the exception of St. Mary's, who w0uld appear to be the team to beat at this stage. Con- trary to what has been printed in the local established press, the Panthers, along with U.N.B. and Universite

de Moncton seem to have a

good shot at toppling the Huskies from their throne.

challenger in the rest of the pack but, at this

moment, it would have to be a dark-horse contender. The fog may clear a bit this weekend, when the Panthers depart for their first regular season road trip with games in Sackville on Saturday and Moncton on Sunday. With any luck at all, we could be 2 - 0 on Monday...

The same thing could be said about the Basketball team. They leave for St. John's, Newfoundland to do battle with Memorial on Friday. Although we have

a small team this season (as if we ever have a tall team), they played aggres- sive ball last weekend and used their speed to good advantage to sweep two games from these same Beothuks. Speaking of winning, we must congradulate the Girls Intermediate Field Hockey Team for grabbing the Maritime Championship in Halifax recently. We hope to have a more com- plete account of this story and possibly a pic- ture of the team at a later date... And finally, we just had to put a plug in for the Dildos. Showing lots of hustle, and playing the role of underdogs, they produced a classic example of what team spirit and a desire to win can do. They captured the Intra- mural Softball Championship with a convincing 7 - 0 victory over the Sophomores on Monday. If all our varsity teams play as they did (and we know they can), then U.P.E.I. is in for a very successful year in the sports field.
