The Organ and the Grits as others See Them.

Siz,—-The Patriot has long ago estab- lished the reputation of being one of the most faultfinding and personally abusive papers in the Dominion; and unde its prerent management, I regret tu say, it still continues unchanged—in this regard at least. In detraction, in coarseness of language, and in gross misrepresentation, its present editor seems determine] to keep up its record. In the absence of the chief, special efforts are doubtless necessary. It is, therefore, not at all surprising that after laboring hard all last week to vilify his opponents, a slight reaction has taken place, which has left him somewhat dull and stupid for the last day or two, There may be other causes for his present de- pression of spirits. As a true Grit, he no doubt occasionally contemplates the svbborn fact that his friends are ‘* out” and the Conservatives are *‘ in,” where, in all human probability, they will respectively remain for many years tu come. But |while I can readily aceount for their gloomy outlook, I cannot understand how Grits ‘expect to benefit politically by simply ‘abusing theiropponents. They must surely \see by this time that misrepresentation and abuse wi!l never again bring them into power. Nevertheless, these two leading ‘Grit characteristics continue to constitute their chief stock in trade. The local organ takes the lead in this regard. In its last weekly edition I find scarcely any- thing but abuse and misrepresentation. Our Conservative nmrembers are represented ‘as being ‘‘political tricksters,” ‘‘sycopli- ants,’ ‘‘imbeciles,” ‘‘unqualitied to represent the people,” etc., etc. And after indulging \in this strain until apparently exhausting jhis vocabulary of offensive epithets, the | writer for the Patriot has the cheek to tell |THE ExaMiIner that except less is said ;about Mr. L. H. Davies in the future, the | Conservative members may expect to svffer \grief by way of retaliation. Threatenings ‘of this sort will not, 1 hope, prevent THe ‘EXAMINER from doing its duty. Mr. | Davies isa public man, and | think THe EXAMINER should claim the right to criti- cise his ac'ions whenever it sees tit to do se, As for Messrs. Brecken, Hackett and Mc- Donald, | think their characters will bear ‘comparison any day with the three great |Grit iuminaries—Messrs. Yeo, Melntyre and Davies.

Grits profess to have a very Ligh opinion of themselves. One unacquainted with their political history might be led to be- lieve that all the ability and all the honesty and all the honor in the Dominion are con- centrated in their representatives. To those who know them, however, they ap- pear in their true colors every time. It is not so very long since the Island had five Grts ann one Conservative representing its interests in the Dominion Parliament. With their friends in power, that was the time for the five Grits to distinguish them- ‘selves. Did they do so? No, never were /more servile followers known. The follow-

has either written himself or got some one else to write for him—like one other of these interesting people whose letters are so written. They all have a hack at Pope; they all go tilling at Pope; they all have something to say to Pope, and bless you, Pope just smiles a pleasing smile and wonders what dispensation of Providence laid him out to be assaulted by five mos- quitoes every day. If Pope did not rise, they would never get on their legs at all. If Pope did not give them some ideas, they would go on in a state of intellectual pau- perism for ever and ever—-amen; particu- larly Mr. Davies, I think. The other four have some rough experience of life, and a cunning which enables them to use it, but Mr. Davies seems to be a sort of gentle and smiling, hopeless and helpless intellectual jelly fish, upright in figure, smart in gait, conscious of great personal charms, and a dignity which must inspire beholders, but quite unconscious of the gentle ripple of fun which his rising in the House causes among the members and in the galleries. Stx,—It has been decided by the tem- perance people of Hunter River to raiss the Scott Act banner on the Ist of July, so that during Camp Drill, as heretofore, it will float securely. Hunter River Divi- sion will open fire on the enemy, while ite fianks will be attacked by the New Glasgow Temperance Alliance, supported by the Wiltshire Battalion. To those contemplat- ing liquor to this village or vicinity this is directe?, and it is to be hoped it will suffice. Otherwise the result is inevitable.

Mutual Marriage Association.

THE promoters of this matrimonial! insur- ance company have, as most who read their prospectus predicted, come to grief. They have committed numberless frauds, have unwarrantably assessed, and the rottenness of the institution,which has its head quarters in Hamilton, Ont., has been ex The Secretary-Treasurer and the Vice-President, who were recently arrested and admitted to bail—3,000 each-—were re-arrested on the 20th inst., on a warrant from Framesville. The Turonto Globe's correspondent says the Crown Attorney refuses to allow them to be taken out of Hamilton to Framesville, as they were on bail on similar charges. Mr. Dirney telegraphed to the Brockville law firm who have the case for the victims in that neighborhood, and they answered that the fact of the Webbers (Secretary and Vice-President) being on bail made ‘no difference in the execution of the Inst warrant. They are wantei in Brighton, but the Brighton officer will probably waive his claim in favor of the other warrant. In the meantime the Webhers are in gaol. and will probably remain there until tne trial on the 27th. They can be kept in Hamilton by declaring their bail off, and committing them to jail till the next hear- ing in that city. It is supposed that the prisoners with the Belleville victims who had them arrested in the first instance, and Mr. Birney, chief constable of Framesville, says he can easily prove that this is so. The prisoners certainly reeeived a great deal of money in their business, and they have been known to receive in one day more registered letters than went to all the business houses of Hawilton. Victims are especially numerous in the eastern part ef Ontario. There are also some victims in Charlottetown. The victims in Hamilton and Framesville claim that not only were bogus assessments made and the money re- tained, but frequent assessments for lange amounts were made on those whose claims were nearly due, so as to induce them to compromise for a small sum.

Arrangements for fast travel from St John to Montreal, between the New Bruns- wick, Maine Central, and Grand Trunk Railways, have been consummated and went into eect on the 23rd inst. The fast train leaving St. John at 6.30 a. m., stand- ard time, reach Yarmouth Junction at 5.43 p- m., making close connection with o train which reaches Montreal at 6 a m. next day, making the trip in 23) hours. Passengers can also leave St. John by the 8 30 p.m. train and reach Montreal, via Danville Jurction, at 11.30 p. m.
